Which do you check first on a listing?
Star rating · number of ratings · the 1-stars · the photos
We changed ours after about the 200th review we read. Curious where everyone else lands.
A $36 cordless car vacuum. 4.0 stars, 612 ratings.
Fifteen percent of those are one star, and they say the same thing: it dies. Shuts off in minutes, or stops holding charge.
A 4.0 with that pattern underneath isn't a 4.0.
Late-August heat is still doing damage in half the country.
The cooling-product complaint that repeats no matter the brand: it works for the first twenty minutes.
Buy for the twenty minutes, or don't buy.
1. Read the title — it's keyword soup, not a description
2. Skip the bullets — the seller wrote those
3. Open the Q&A — buyers wrote those
4. Then the reviews
The order matters. Most people do it backwards.
"Sponsored" is doing a lot of work at the top of Amazon search.
The first genuinely ranked result is usually four rows down, past the fold, where nobody scrolls.
Midea 3.3 cu ft mini fridge. 4.3 stars from 161 buyers.
The single most repeated complaint isn't the fridge — it's the box. Dented top edges, crushed door corners, photos attached.
Good fridge. Inspect it before the return window closes.
A brand with 400 reviews and a brand with 400,000 are playing different games.
The small one still has to be good. The big one only has to be findable.
Photos in reviews outrank photos in the listing.
One is lit by a studio. The other is lit by a kitchen bulb at 9pm — which is roughly the lighting the thing will live in.
A ceiling fan light that screws into a socket. 3.2 stars, 13 ratings.
The complaint that shows up on separate units: the breeze is barely there.
A fan that doesn't move air is a lamp. Skip it.
Free returns changed how people review.
If something disappoints, they send it back and never write anything. The complaint you needed never gets typed.
Which is why the 3-star reviews are worth more than they look.
1. "Works great so far" — written in week one
2. "Still going strong" — written in month six
3. "Update: it died" — written in month eleven
Same reviewer. Only one of those three tells you what you're buying.
Halloween is ten weeks out.
The one thing October buyers repeat every year: the good props were already gone.
The people who bought in August aren't smarter. They're just earlier.
What's a product you genuinely love that has one flaw you've just... accepted?
Ours from this week's reading: a $29 tire inflator that gets too hot to hold after four tires. Everyone still keeps it in the trunk.
If a listing has twelve photos and not one shows the thing next to a hand, a mug, or a doorway, that's a size complaint waiting to happen.
"Smaller than I expected" is the most common surprise in Amazon reviews. The specs were right every time.
The 1-star reviews on any listing are about two different companies.
Half are about the product. Half are about the box that showed up crushed.
Read them separately.
REST Evercool cooling comforter. 4.4 stars, 3,870 ratings.
The complaint that repeats: the cool feel fades in 15 to 30 minutes. It cools you getting in, not at 3am.
If that's the reason you're buying it, skip it.
Reviews from the last 30 days are worth more than reviews from launch.
Suppliers change. Molds wear out. A 2023 five-star and a 2026 one-star can be the same product name and a different product.
