CORRUPTION Yesterday I overheard a parent of an S4 leaver trying to secure a place for their child for S5 say something like: “I’ve already paid the bribe, and now I have to pay school fees by Wednesday.” What struck me wasn’t that they had paid a bribe, but how casually they said it. No one around them reacted or appeared shocked. It was treated as completely normal, almost routine. I haven’t been blessed with school going children yet, so I’ve never had to navigate those pressures or understand challenges parents face, but that moment stayed with me. It made me realise just how deeply corruption has woven itself into our everyday life. So I decided to inform myself of another angle of corruption (from the extreme case in Ministries) I haven’t explored before: Prelude: the Psychology of Public Apathy Public apathy isn’t a moral failure. It’s a psychological adaptation to a system people believe they cannot influence. Once you understand the mechanisms, you see why even well‑intentioned citizens disengage. 1. Learned Helplessness When people repeatedly see: ➡️Corrupt officials go unpunished ➡️Whistleblowers punished ➡️investigations stall ➡️Stolen funds quietly written off …they internalize a simple conclusion: “Nothing will change.” This is classic learned helplessness — a state where individuals stop trying because past attempts produced no results. It’s not laziness; it’s conditioning. 2. Normalisation Through Repetition When corruption becomes: ➡️Daily ➡️Predictable ➡️Expected …the brain stops treating it as an anomaly. It becomes part of the “environmental background noise.” Psychologically, humans conserve mental energy by normalising repeated patterns. If every police stop, hospital visit, or government office requires a bribe, the mind stops resisting and starts adapting. 3. Fear of Retaliation People are not apathetic because they don’t care — they’re apathetic because they’re afraid. Fear creates silence. Silence creates the illusion of acceptance. That illusion reinforces the system. I have experience in this. I have been urged by several family members and friends genuinely concerned for my life or future in Civil Service. I refuse to accept silence. 4. Diffusion of Responsibility When corruption is everywhere, individuals think: ➡️“Someone else should report it.” ➡️“This is too big for me.” ➡️“Let the government handle it.” This is the bystander effect applied at national scale. Everyone waits for someone else to act. 5. Cognitive Dissonance Reduction Citizens know corruption is wrong, but they also know they must navigate it to survive. To reduce the mental discomfort, people adjust their beliefs: ➡️“At least the officer is also struggling.” ➡️“This is how things work here.” ➡️“If I don’t pay, I’ll suffer.” This psychological self‑protection gradually becomes acceptance. 6. Survival Priorities Override Civic Duty When people are focused on: ➡️School Fees ➡️Rent ➡️Medical Bills ➡️Daily income …they have limited bandwidth for abstract battles like “fighting corruption.” Survival compresses civic engagement. Apathy is often a rational allocation of limited energy. 7. Corruption Becomes a Parallel System That Works Faster When the corrupt route is: ➡️Faster ➡️Predictable ➡️Less bureaucratic …citizens start seeing corruption as efficient and official channels as obstacles. This creates a perverse incentive: the corrupt system feels more functional than the legal one. Once corruption becomes the “working system,” apathy toward reform becomes inevitable. 8. Loss of Collective Identity Corruption fragments society into: ➡️“my tribe” ➡️“my network” ➡️“my people” When national identity weakens, collective action collapses. People stop fighting for the system because they no longer feel they belong to it. 9. Emotional Exhaustion Years of scandals, inquiries, commissions, and reports with no consequences create corruption fatigue. People emotionally shut down to protect themselves from constant disappointment. Why This Matters: APATHY IS NOT PASSIVE - IT IS ACTIVE OXYGEN FOR CORRUPTION. @Parliament_Ug @OAG_Uganda @IGGUganda @CID1_UG @AntiGraft_SH @StateHouseUg @GCICUganda @GovUganda @ODPPUGANDA
On this day, December 10, 1980, 45 years ago, Ugandans were voting. It was the first direct presidential election in Uganda’s post-Independence history (since 1962). Below were the official results, whose disputation (alleged rigging) took candidate Yoweri Museveni and others to the bush. Over 90% of the 45 million Ugandans living today were not yet born when this election happened. Perhaps only one of the presidential candidates in this 1980 election is still alive, and he is a presidential candidate today.
In the next Sunday Monitor, I explain the Facebook ban, how the number of users in Uganda has risen from 2.9 million in 2019 to about 3.5 million today. And how M7, the "wealth creator," has sabotaged so many Ugandan businesses with this ban. Get your copy before he gets his!
Know the roads signs and avoid mistakes on the road.
One of the indicators of desperation, frustration, and a breakdown in a country’s service delivery and leadership is the number of people searching for miracles for problems caused by poverty, ignorance, and disease. They’ll either run to traditional or modern shrines. That’s why these have become the most profitable ventures of modern conmanship. Just study people’s problems and psychologically manipulate them accordingly, you will also take the little they have. The state won’t intervene because the cons are relieving it from pressure by spiritualising the existential problems of the gullible masses. The solution to their suffering is not in working hard/smart and demanding for what is rightfully theirs, but crying to God and ba jajja to chase away demons of poverty, demons of disease, and demons of ignorance. Every problem is blamed on demons; personal responsibility is removed from the equation and government is absolved of its glaring failures. The hysterical masses simply have to chorus ‘nkitwaala mu linnya lya Yesu (oba bweeza jajja)’, even when there is glaring global evidence that no society has ever solved its problems by SIMPLY calling on God/gods to intervene. It is in this sense, as observed by Karl Marx, that religion becomes opium (enjaga) for the masses. While they are high on this opium, they can’t see the reality around them. They can’t see how exploited they are. They can’t see the solutions around them that require their conscious ACTION. Whoever tries to open their eyes is quickly castigated by their exploitative leaders as possessed by a demon. The masses are warned to stay away from such debates, just as a prison warder keeps the keys far from the prisoner. Mass desperation is big business.

✍✍✍ Please read and lets learn as leaders Meeting an old class mate, we had not seen each other for about 30 years. The Lord has been kind to me. When I saw him again - this time at a hotel lobby - he was looking simple. He wore simple Ankara attire. I felt touched. He walked up to me and was glad to see me again. But deep within me I was not impressed with his status compared to mine and poor me, I couldn't hide it. We exchanged contact details and I could see the joy in him as he collected mine. I told him I will drop him home in my brand new Range Rover and I pointed it to him. He declined and said he had already called for his car. It looked old, a 2001 Honda Accord. I invited him the next day for lunch at my house. A part of me wanted to impress him - To show off my success and affluence to him, while another was to discuss opportunities and possibly help him. He drove to Parkview where I lived. He looked impressed with my home. I had taken a heavy mortgage. In fact I was heavily in debt. We had lunch. He told me he was into small business and particularly real estate. I brought up more business discussions, but he didn't sound too interested. I asked him how I could help him. He said he was fine. I even told him if he was interested, I could help him secure some loans... He looked at me and smiled. He told me he would invite me over soon to his place. His old car came for him. I was grateful to God for what I had. “Fingers are not all equal”, I thought to myself...I was lucky. I worked in a good place. Two weeks later, we went to see him in Ikeja. My wife and I. She was reluctant to go because she was not impressed with the man's status as to warrant our visiting him in his house. I was able to convince her that we were close friends in college. We saw the Estate. *Wuraola Estate.* We asked for directions to his home. Those leading us spoke his name with deference. It was a simple but lovely home. A 4 bedroom bungalow. I saw 4 cars parked in front. We entered his home. It was simply elegant with a touch of class inside. He welcomed us warmly. Lunch was well served. His wife called him Baba Wuraola During lunch, he asked about my MD. He said they were friends. I saw a company gift on one of his tables nearby. That company owned about 38% shares where I worked. I enquired from him about it. He smiled. He told me he owned the company. He also owned the estate. I did not know when I called him sir... I was in awe of him too. I had learnt a lesson in humility - A big one. Appearances are deceptive. He noticed my discomfort. Driving back home, I was very quiet. My wife was humbled and extremely calm. I could perceive the thoughts in her mind. I looked at myself. Living on loans, heavy loans and showing off while someone who pays my salary is quite modest and living a simple life! Indeed Deeper Rivers Flow In Majestic Silence! Copied!
We no longer critically study ourselves and our forever changing behaviours, we only study our problems through the secondhand lenses of ancestral texts, while those ancestors built their knowledge by staring directly into their own lives. They studied their life, for us we study literature on life. The difference is that they created original thought and for us, we recycle it. And then we foolishly wonder why our problems in humanity have no reliable cure, and our intellectuals are crammers and regurgitate. Academia, in its present form, is no longer knowledge but simple citation--an industry of footnotes where thought itself is outsourced. Scam.
Yesterday in Mbale!! They're fighting an idea too strong to silence with this criminality. #FreeUganda
Contrary to traditional financial institutions that have failed to embrace innovation, FinTechs and Mobile Network Operators are revolutionising lending. 7% of Ugandans now use digital transfers, signaling a growing shift toward digital financial services.
