It’s heartbreaking to hear someone say “I wasn’t always like this.” And by “this” they mean the anxiety they never used to have, the fears they didn’t know how to name, the little things that now make them uncomfortable, the songs that bring back memories they’re still trying to heal from and the way they struggle to trust people the way they once did. They remember being lighter, more carefree, more open to love. They remember when trusting someone didn’t feel so frightening and when happiness didn’t come with the fear of losing it. Somewhere along the way, life happened. People hurt them. Things changed. They learned to protect parts of themselves they once gave so freely. But what breaks my heart is when people begin to believe that this version of themselves is somehow harder to love. That their anxiety makes them a burden, their fears make them complicated or their healing makes them less deserving of patience and tenderness. You don’t have to be the person you were before you got hurt to deserve love. This version of you, too, deserves gentleness, understanding and the kind of care that reminds you that being wounded never made you less worthy of being loved.

The reality is that some people simply don’t align with you, no matter how much you understand them or how much good you see in them. This is the last year I’m letting my empathy keep me attached to people my discernment has already told me aren’t right for me. Just because I understand someone’s pain, recognise their potential or know why they behave the way they do doesn’t mean I have to keep making room for them in my life. I can have compassion for someone without compromising my peace. I can understand their struggles without excusing their behaviour. And I can wish someone well without needing to remain connected to them. Understanding someone is not the same as being meant to keep them in your life. I can have empathy for your story and still choose myself.

It all boils down to people lacking hobbies, purpose, high self esteem, etc. A lot of people treat relationships like things meant to keep them occupied b/c they have nothing else going on. There are people who don’t do much but work and date.
I don’t do relationship discourse but whenever those conversations cross over, it seems so obvious that people think of being in a relationship as owning the other person and making them submit to your control. But why are y’all with people you’re that suspicious of?
