US roads are so badly designed that walking, an activity fundamental to human health and development which imposes neither risks or costs, requires the situational awareness of a hunted gazelle. It should be safe to walk drunk, tired, old, sick or with a disability or impairment.

I walk for transportation and assume the worst of drivers: they can’t and don’t see, are distracted, negligent and aggressive. Most of the danger comes from situations completely outside of my control and secondary to 8 decades of road design that prioritizes LOS over human life.
@bellachu10 Roads are for motor vehicles, commerce, transportation.
@bellachu10 Good faith question here. Does this data set include cyclists as pedestrians?
@bellachu10 @MichaelSFuhrer Why did the change happen after 2000? Were new roads built that are more dangerous? Otherwise it doesn’t seem like the roads themselves would be the explanation.
@bellachu10 I'm currently at a rehab/assisted living facility in suburban New Jersey and there is a convenience store across the street but it is unreachable by foot.🤦♂️
@bellachu10 We aren’t in 2020, Bella. We have three years of newer data on pedestrian safety.
@bellachu10 Every car driver has a smartphone and infotainment system to look at, we can’t expect car drivers to look at the road when driving, let alone keep an eye out for children or baby strollers. 🤦
