SAVE THIS BEFORE CALLING BILLING:
□ Medical bill
□ Itemized charges
□ EOB
□ Payment records
□ Account information
□ Your questions
□ Notes
Write down the date, department and what you're told.
You don't need to sound angry to question a medical bill.
Try:
"I want to understand this balance. Can you explain how it was calculated?"
Calm. Specific. Documented.
Start there.
8 questions to ask billing:
1. What's the current balance?
2. Can I get the itemized bill?
3. Has insurance processed it?
4. What adjustments were made?
5. What does the EOB say?
6. Is assistance available?
7. Are payment plans available?
8. Who handles disputes?
5 phrases that usually don't help on a billing call:
❌ "Just make it cheaper."
❌ "This is a scam."
❌ "Fix it."
❌ "I'll never pay it."
❌ "Insurance should cover everything."
Ask about the numbers instead.
DENIED CLAIM vs. BILL DISAGREEMENT
Denied claim: the insurer says it won't pay some or all of the claim.
Bill disagreement: you question the amount, charges or balance on the bill.
The next step depends on which problem you have.
When a medical bill doesn't make sense, ask:
"Can you explain how this balance was calculated?"
Then ask what the adjustments, payments and remaining patient responsibility represent.
Specific questions make the next step clearer
Keep these 5 records during a medical bill dispute:
1. Itemized bill
2. EOB
3. Payment records
4. Billing or insurance correspondence
5. Notes from calls
Add the date to every important note.
The biggest mistake before negotiating a medical bill?
Negotiating before you know what you're negotiating.
Check the charges, insurance adjustments, payments and EOB first.
Then question the balance.
ER bills aren't the only source of medical debt.
In KFF's 2022 survey, 59% of adults with health care debt said lab fees or diagnostic tests contributed to their debt. 56% cited doctor visits.

@skcRonnie@JJChizzy Did insurance cover any of it, or are you paying out of pocket? if insured, i'd compare the EOB with the $550 first. if uninsured, ask billing about its self-pay rate and financial assistance. the next step depends on which applies.
Financial assistance and a payment plan solve different problems.
Financial assistance may reduce what you owe if you qualify.
A payment plan spreads payments over time.
Check whether either option applies before choosing one.
Your bill says $4,800.
You remember paying $1,000.
Don't assume the difference is an error or that the payment disappeared.
Find the $1,000 payment in your records, then trace how the current balance was calculated.
@KFF People hear “your job offers health insurance” and assume that means you're covered, problem solved.
But if the cost is enough to make people opt out in the first place, that's a pretty big gap in access. and that's before they even need to use it.
Before putting a medical bill on a credit card, ask:
1. Is the balance correct?
2. Has insurance processed it?
3. Does the EOB match?
4. Is assistance available?
5. Is there a payment plan?
Know the balance before choosing how to pay.
KFF found that 44% of adults with current health care debt had not paid a medical or dental bill in full because they weren't sure the bill was accurate.
That's a reason to check the numbers before paying.

You have insurance.
You paid your share.
Then another $3,000 bill shows up.
Before assuming you owe it:
Check the bill.
Check the EOB.
Check the insurance information.
Then ask billing to explain the balance.
Then keep a record of the conversation.
Write down the date, department, person you spoke with and what you were told.
Ask for important details in writing when possible.
You get a medical bill you can't comfortably pay.
Don't rush into the first payment option.
Start with:
1. Check the bill.
2. Check the EOB.
3. Ask about assistance.
4. Ask about payment options.
