This last known slave ship to illegally traffic people from Africa into slavery in the U.S. was owned by Timothy Meaher, an Irish American merchant. Both his father James O'Meagher and mother Susannah Millay were from Co. Kilkenny.

I did not expect tonight to see that one of my personal heroes passed away. I nearly fell to the floor as I burst out in tears reading the news. John Lewis was an inspiration. I will forever be grateful that I had the honor to meet and speak with him.

I typically look at pre-1860s census records. When did they stop asking for occupations? I just filled mine out for the first time and it honestly seemed too quick.
