lots of talk about “ethical AI”, not so much about what it actually means to be an ethical agent... long story short, if what we care about is “bad stuff that happens due to AI,” I don’t think (ethical) agency is a particularly useful or even logically sound starting point!!!
Using this new trustworthiness score to prioritize human review of LLM outputs can have large (up to 80%) cost savings over other popular methods like OpenAI’s log probs or asking the LLM to self-reflect: cleanlab.ai/blog/trustwort…
Today we're launching PRISM, a new resource to diversify the voices contributing to alignment. We asked 1500 people around the world for their stated preferences over LLM behaviours, then we observed their contextual preferences in 8000 convos with 21 LLMs arxiv.org/abs/2404.16019
I always strongly suggest people to read this work (arxiv.org/abs/2207.10551) by @YiTayML and @m__dehghani when discussing the model architecture. It almost takes up to 50% pages of the literature survey Chapter in my PhD thesis. It is so visionary to study this in 2022. I can…

Wild how helping nonnative English speakers with professional writing is one of the biggest benefits of LLM systems for underserved populations, but Twitter saw that and said “eww our science papers are full of LLM sludge now” Gotta be more careful with the discourse next time
Constitutional AI showed LMs can learn to follow constitutions by labeling their own outputs. But why can't we just tell a base model the principles of desired behavior and rely on it to act appropriately? Introducing SAMI: Self-Supervised Alignment with Mutual Information!
It’s pretty tractable—for ARA capabilities, it’s enough to have 1. Agentic abilities, performing end-to-end, complex tasks with only high-level instructions 2. Bleeding edge ability for ML and research eng; current systems are close for SWE and data sci so it’s not too far off

last thursday, Meta dropped Llama 3, the OpenAI killer. no doubt a very impressive model! but over the weekend, we discovered an extremely trivial programmatic jailbreak against llama 3...sorry zuck!😘 so much for all that safety-tuning☹️ code: github.com/haizelabs/llam…
We have just released 🍷 FineWeb: 15 trillion tokens of high quality web data. We filtered and deduplicated all CommonCrawl between 2013 and 2024. Models trained on FineWeb outperform RefinedWeb, C4, DolmaV1.6, The Pile and SlimPajama!
We have a new preprint out - your language model is not a reward, it’s a Q function! 1. The likelihood of the preferred answer must go down - it’s a policy divergence 2. MCTS guided decoding on language is equivalent to likelihood search on DPO 3. DPO learns credit assignment

Many don't know that GPUs automatically leverage ternary and fine-grained sparsity to accelerate your matmuls! e.g. A matmul with ternary + 90% sparsity results in 33% more FLOPs in my benchmark. (not joking) I explore this "optimization" here: thonking.ai/p/strangely-ma… (1/3)
@GrahamFleming_ Good thing I never charged anybody for those videos 😅
@brianryhuang closer to the former actually. the ones that didn’t do a quant finance projects were PhD fellas IIRC. but two caveats; 1) I didn’t get a look at all of the CVs 2) I’m recalling from memory

Simple and clean is about two lovers who want different things but when they are together they feel like the complications created by their differences can be overcome by their closeness…making their messy complexities “simple and clean” 👍🏿 hope this helps
hikaru utada’s simple and clean is proof that you can deadass hop on the mic and speak complete nonsense and nobody will give a fuck if the music good enough
I’m a shill for 2 things; Ridge & Personal Projects. I had a look at the CVs for incoming grads/interns, and all of them have done personal projects. IMO there’s so many low hanging fruits that makes a good project, it’s quite unfortunate ppl focus on the low impact stuffs.
advice for new grads: - don't do one of those bootcamps. waste of money. - do at least one side project that you can talk about in an interview - lie a little (have a back story to back up your lies) - leetcode - don't expect $200k - pay your dues for the first year on the job
I've historically been very critical of EA, but this is just about the worst critique of EA possible. It argues that they were secretly, nefariously talking about a Hidden Agenda in "core EA," on... *checks notes* publicly visible online forums and all of their in-person events.

Really nice thread. One aspect that makes a job/place fun is having great colleagues. Pick a place where the work, the colleagues and the environment gives you joy.
Young scientists regularly ask me for career advice. Academia or industry? Big company or startup? US or Europe? Good scientists in AI disciplines are fortunate to have many choices. But choosing can be stressful. I always give the same advice. 1/10
15 people? That's cute. 😬 At reka our pretraining team is 3-5 people at max, who were all also working >50% time in other projects. 🫠
Our latest model Inflection-2.5 (inflection.ai/inflection-2-5) is not bad. In fact, it was the ~4th best publicly "known" models when it was released in early March. And it was created by our pretraining team of < 15 people! 2/
