Gall of the week, discovered in the British Plant Gall Society's excellent journal Cecidology, is St. Gall, an Irish monk 550 - 645. Photo from Wikipedia by Andreas Praefcke
Gall of the week, a first record for the UK, is the agamic generation gall of Pediaspis aceris on sycamore, Acer psdeudoplatanus, in Cornwall. The sexual generation causes berry-like galls on leaves. Found and photographed by Peter Floyd-Spong.
Today is the first day of April Gall Week 2024! For the rest of the week and the following weekend, we are encouraging everyone to get out there and find as many galls as you can and report them on iNat as part of the project: inaturalist.org/projects/gall-…
Gall of the week is a sectioned Diplolepis rosae showing a larva in one of the cells. Properly known as the bedeguar gall, not the mossy rose gall, found on roses, Rosa spp. Photo by Joe Shorthouse.
Now named Rabdophaga rigidae, thanks for the correction @gallformers
Now named Rabdophaga rigidae, thanks for the correction @gallformers
Gall of the week, found in North America, is that of Mayetiola rigidae (willow beaked-gall midge) on willow , Salix spp. Photo by Peter Shirley
Gall of the week, complete with spectacular causer, is that of the tephretid fly Urophora cardui on various thistles, Cirsium spp. Gall photo not known, fly photo by Malcolm Storey.
Gall of the week, the cottonwool gall of cynipid wasp Andricus quercusramuli, sexual generation, on oak, Quercus petraea. Photographer not known.
Gall of the week, together with its cynipid causer, is Andricus sieboldi agamic generation. Found, usually low down, on oaks Quercus spp. Photos by Ann Smith.
Looking for something on Youtube I was diverted to search for plant galls and discovered a potential treasure trove of dozens of items. I stopped counting at 50, mostly just a few minutes long, but one was three hours. Worth a look.
Tryng? Think they already have.
Gall of the week, a return visit, is caused by the gall midge Ametrodiplosis thalictricola on meadow-rues, Thalictrum spp. Photo by David Gould.
Gall of the week. What's in some galls? An inner gall, and here's one in the open. It's that of the cynipid wasp Andricus foecundatrix f. agamic on oak Quercus spp. Photo by Julia Saunders.
Gall of the week, a chalcid wasp gall caused by Hemadis nubillipennis (pteromalid) gall on blueberry., Vaccinium sp. Sudbury Ontario, photo by Peter Shirley.
Gall of the week, appearing soon in a wood near you, is the fungal gall of Puccinia poarum on colts-foot, Tussilago farfara. Photo by Roelef Jan Koops.
Gall of the week, do you know the causer? On oak, Quercus sp. in Sarasota Florida, so probably a cynipid. It had a busy time, with several different sized parasitoids or inquilines successfully emerging, and the causer developing in the central chamber. Photo by Peter Shirley
Gall of the week is caused by the gall midge Oligotrophus juniperinus on Junipers, Juniperus spp. Photo by Roelef Jan Koops.
Gall of the week is caused by the cynipid wasp Aphelonyx cerricola agamic generation on Turkey oak, Quercus cerris. Photo by Steve McWilliam.
Gall of the week is that of the cynipid Andricus grossulariae, agamic generation, on oaks Quercus spp. Photo by Maria Fremlin.

Impressed by these large Oak Apples today on my local oaks. Galls caused by the tiny wasp Biorhiza pallida. Apparently used for making ink by boiling them in water for some time, a chemical reaction between tannins & iron gives a dark ink, used for centuries for writing...
The oak apple gall will be appearing on an Oak tree near you - this is one on my walk in the Sx High Weald this morning. Caused by the sexual generation of the larvae of the Gall Wasp Biorhiza pallida the winged adults will emerge this summer @britgalls

Common but don’t think I’ve seen as many oak apples as this year. I couldn’t snap the biggest ones as working and running after children!!
@vivyouell Yes, these are oak apples caused by a wasp (Biorhiza pallida). @britgalls wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-explo…
Andricus lucidus (the larger gall + wasp). I collected the gall on the 6th of March 2024 and over the last few days wasps have been emerging from it such as the one pictured. / / / #entomology #wasps #hymenoptera #insects

If you haven't seen bladmineerders.nl it can't be overstated how good a resource it is. You can now find and identify in minutes species which haven't been recorded in Ireland in many decades.
Gall of the week (maybe) is caused by the tortrid moth Rhyacionia buoliana on pines, Pinus spp. Some doubt as to whether or not it is a true gall, but its compatriot R. resinella does cause a gall. Photo by Jean-Yves Baugnee from the excellent Bladmineerders website.
