A couple of very fresh Large Ranunculus, Polymixus flavicincta, in the moth trap this morning. These are quite common here, but stunning when fresh. Chilterns VC24. @UpperThamesBC @bucksinvertgro1 @BucksMKERC #mothsmatter
Moths are brown and boring, right? Not these! Merveille(s) du jour and Barred Sallow. @UpperThamesBC @BucksMKERC @bucksinvertgro1 #mothsmatter
Ivy bees, Colletes hederae, were first spotted at @BBOWT Dancersend last year and now we have a sizeable aggregation nesting amongst the Chiltern gentians in an open area of soft chalk - a lovely addition to early autumn reserve features. @bucksinvertgro1 @BucksBuzzing

Missing seeing insects in the woods in mid-winter? Think again! I collected this small bracket fungus a few weeks ago and then forgot it was in a box. Opened it today to find over 3000 beetle larvae and c 25 tiny adult beetles had come out of the pores. Insects are all around us!
Wow - very unusual to see Early Bumblebee in winter, a new phenomenon in Buckinghamshire!

Not often one sees a positive and well-informed article dedicated to a single spider species in a UK national newspaper! And a common, rather ordinary species too. Well done @guardian @BritishSpiders theguardian.com/environment/20…
2020 marks 10 years since my first biological record. I have written a little blog post reflecting on those years. It is mainly an excuse to play with QGIS and my records, but also to think about some of the things I have come to realise along the way. ryanclarkecology.wordpress.com/2020/01/03/a-d…
Happy New Year everyone! I've decided to make all my photos on #Flickr available on a #creativecommons licence, hopefully amongst the c.8000 images (mostly of UK #wildlife) there are some which will be of use to someone @Buzz_dont_tweet @NatureBftB flic.kr/p/Yprx1s
Brilliant news, great to see Trevor's work being recognised, his contribution to biological recording has been enormously positive

Happy New Year everyone! Make it your resolution to let your councillors know we need less mowing and more long grass and wildflowers.

Even if Santa didn’t bring you a moth-trap, you can still see fabulous moths in 2020. I recorded 65 species at our low-energy porch light in 2019 incl Common Emerald, Waved Umber, Barred Yellow & Large Ranunculus #MothsMatter (📷C.Manley, P.Clement, R.Thompson)
My last wildlife record on 31 Dec 2019 was 7-spot Ladybird, and the first in 2020 turned out to be 16-spot Ladybird, closely followed by 22-spot - a great splash of colour on new year's day @UKLadybirds
Strange #12DaysWild @BBOWT @WildlifeTrusts. Preparing for another wave of visitors so just had time to start working through great range of beetles found in grass tussocks yesterday at our @bucksinvertgro1 End of Yr Invert Hunt at Dancersend. In very cold shed so counts as 'Wild'
1st visit of decade to @BBOWT Dancersend and had to poke around in grass tussocks and moss for beetles ... thrilled with my new invertebrate of the year. I haven't managed to ID this pseudoscorpion to species yet, but definitely new for me #12DaysWild @bucksinvertgro1
Good weather for joint @bucksinvertgro1 @BBOWT End of Year Invert Hunt at Dancersend this morning. Perfect size group - 5 BIG members + 6 adults, 2 kids and a dog. Plenty of finds from many invert groups - lots still to be identified. Brilliant having @kitenet there to help IDs

Thanks to everyone who joined our annual Brown Hairstreak egg hunt at RSPB Otmoor this morning! Twenty seven eggs found by 24 people in about 90 minutes. This is about half the number we normally find here, though there has been some blackthorn coppicing to maintain the hedges.
