Have you ever been told you COULDN'T do something? We aren't talking about, you can't EAT that thing because it will kill you (looking at you dogs) OR you won't make the NBA because you're terrible at basketball (looking at you dadguy). We are talking about being told you COULDN'T do something because of WHO you are. Dadguy - @ZedScience - was never, ever told he couldn't do things. In fact he was always told the stuff he could do. He was told: Oh, you could be lawyer, you're great at writing and making arguments. Wow, you are great a public speaking, you should be a teacher. You're decent at science, maybe think about being a scientist. He was NEVER told: You know, that thing you want to do...it's really not for men. On #InternationalWomensDay we want to shout out to all of the women who were told that the thing they wanted to do wasn't for girls and basically said "f" that I'm doing it anyway. Our humans talk to scientists ALL of the time. Many of the women scientists talk about having great role models who cheered them on and championed their choices in STEM. Many speak about people who have stood in their way and said the thing you love and you want to get isn't for you. Because you are a girl. To rise up over that take courage. Things aren't equal or perfect yet. We hope one day they will. Our small role in this is highlighting the women who said "f" that and did it anyway. The young girls in school today see themselves in you. #InternationalWomensDay
@bunsenbernerbmd As a young autistic Asian woman, I deal with being told that I do not "belong". Still,I forge ahead. I blend my love for art, architecture, math, and science for art conservation and preservation architecture in cultural heritage and I couldn't be happier.
@bunsenbernerbmd I was told I would never be anything but a front line call centre rep because I was a woman by a customer once. I'm now a project manager who specializes in developing solutions to make the job of those reps easier. And by easier I sometimes mean a button to hang up on Karen's!
@bunsenbernerbmd I was born and raised the good old fashioned way and had nothing but pressure to settle down/start a family/be a housewife/ look after children type work, now I am 42, not married/no kids and doing a science degree 😂 follow your heart and dreams! Oh and p.s. SCIENCE RULES!
@bunsenbernerbmd *I* was never told I couldn't but I overheard my dad being told "why would you let her go to college? She's only going to get married."
@bunsenbernerbmd I had a professor in grad school tell me I would not be able to pass his macroeconomics class because I had never taken calculus. I got a B+. 😁
@bunsenbernerbmd I was told I couldn’t take science options at school as I wasn’t clever enough and then that I couldn’t do Higher Ed. Here I am a post grad Cert, another on its way, two Masters degrees one in science one in business and in yr three of my PhD in Marine biology
@bunsenbernerbmd I was told I couldn’t be a fighter pilot (when in flight school), I couldn’t be an engineer, all I could do with math (that I am good at) was be a teacher. I was told I should be a nurse or legal secretary. All because I’m a girl.
@bunsenbernerbmd Yep. I said fork that and did it anyway. Not one second of regret.
@bunsenbernerbmd Have kids because thats what women do. I was always told not to ask questions of men and certainly dont rock the boat. Dont talk about feelings because it'll make the family look bad. Defer to the men. Be a damn lady. I may not be a good lady, but I will not be silenced anymore!
@bunsenbernerbmd My father always told me I could do and be anything I wanted, provided I got an education. He was very big on education, spending 60+ years as an educator.
