@cavesofsteel I think this is arguably not a hot take (though it depends who you talk to). I do think it’s important to consider the similarities in core traits (sensory, behavioral + comm.), while also acknowledging the differences.

Parents/caregivers, please stop forcing autistic & disabled kids (and adults) to do things "for their own good" by non-autistic/disabled standards. Just got back from an "accessible" event in which a young person cried the entire time but their adult refused to let them leave. :(

@c4ucontact Thank you. While advocates of the Neurodiversity model (even acknowledged these days by the very medically conventional Simon Baron-Cohen) reject overly stigmatizing, pathologizing terms for autism, most do accept that it can be disabling. This has been widely misrepresented.
I was asked to see a 4 week old baby in GP clinic yesterday. I’d just had some bad news about my infertility the day before. I spoke to my supervisor and asked if someone else could see that patient as my emotions were too fresh. She agreed. Do you think this is reasonable?
@c4ucontact I think you may have misread/misinterpreted. I was agreeing with you, for the most part.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you're in academia, there's a decent chance you're in a toxic workplace. There is far too much tolerance for shady behavior within academia. Commenters, back me up here: raise your hand if you've witnessed toxicity in academia.
@WhistleblowingT The parents almost certainly do "get it." If you're overwhelmed/under resourced, try addressing the folks who can actually do anything about it. Those parents cannot. They're probably at least as dissatisfied and burned out by the state of things as you are.
