Ideas on business, systems, AI and owner independence.

@BradSugars Measure first makes sense to me. It gives the person a way to check their own work before it lands back with you, and a number is a lot easier to hand over than a feeling about what good looks like.
@davidrush For me it was handing over the decisions. I'd delegated plenty of the work and kept every call, so the team waited on me and the bigger work waited behind them.
@audracarpenter Same in recruitment. The agencies that said they covered every role got fewer referrals than the ones known for one thing. People pass on a name they can explain in a sentence.
@DanielPriestley Pencilling names into the boxes helps too. Once you see how many still say the owner's name, you know which hires and handovers come first.
@jordan_ross_8F Good filter. It can creep in at any size as well. When I ran a company of about 50 staff I handed over plenty of tasks and kept every decision, so it all still ran through my head. Worth asking any agency who signs off the work when the founder is away.
@BradSugars Writing the list down helps with this. When everything sits in your head it all feels urgent. On paper you can see which one, once sorted, makes three of the others go away, and start there.
@staysaasy The same goes for selling a business. A buyer still asks who brings in the customers, how the money comes in and what happens when the owner isn't there. None of those questions has changed with AI.
@LordShermP A simple next step is writing next to each one who should have made the call. If it's the same name every time, that person probably needs the authority to decide, and the owner needs to stop answering first.
@richschefren The second payday only comes if a buyer can see that judgment written down somewhere. If it all lives in the owner's head, it leaves with them on the day the sale completes.
@richschefren The morning explanation is such a good test, and you could run it next Monday with no buyer anywhere near it. Which bit do owners usually find hardest to get out of their own heads and onto paper?
@MichaelEGerber The hard part for me was thinking I'd stepped back because I'd handed over the tasks. I was still making every call, so the team just waited on me. Asking them what they thought we should do changed more than any new process did.
@CameronHerold Feels like this gets harder the more the business depends on you, because then your income and the business are the same thing. Do you see owners do better paying themselves properly first, or building a buffer outside the business?
@markLFeinberg Love the two sentence test. When I left corporate I had to be honest with myself about which of those two was louder. Do buyers tend to find the toward sentence gets easier once they've spent time with the actual customers?
Sending photos of labels is a great call. That's the step that usually kills tracking for people.
The "what should I still eat today" question is the bit I'd use most. I box most mornings, so I'd want it to know a training day from a rest day. Are you planning to have it shift the 500 deficit on heavier days? 🫡
@NerdyDudeofEAH You can build a life that makes perfect sense on paper and still realise you’ve deferred too much of yourself along the way.
Being grateful for what you’ve built and deciding you want something different can both be true.
I can happily disappear down a rabbit hole on business models, psychology, AI, boxing, decision-making or how people actually behave inside organisations.
The upside is you start spotting connections between things that look completely unrelated on the surface.
The downside is having 14 tabs open in your head at once.
