@vaillancourt_dr @TarazLee Published standards = your school's handbook standards. Like 89=B, 90=A. The core problem is letter grades. We tried 'high pass' 'pass' 'low pass' 'fail' for a few years. Students hated it; employers wanted a GPA equivalent. Long term, grades mean nothing. So much wasted angst.

@peterbakernyt @DLeonhardt "Not a single documented Covid infection anywhere in the world from casual outdoor interactions" does not equal "no one caught Covid from casual outdoor interaction. Could the press please stop treating Covid risk news as all or nothing? Geez. Read a probability book.

@vaillancourt_dr @TarazLee There is measurement error the other way, too. For every student you give the higher grade to, do you reduce the grade of another student who eked out a grade? I think it best to stick with published standards, call assignment grades as you see 'em, and let the math stand.

@amayor @alice_radley Henry VIII's men went out behind the cathedral in Durham and took down an ibex native to the Alps? The provenance of this item sounds tricky. Identity of the species for starters, as you asked. Even if this obtained squarely, much of the museum's holdings are thanks to violence.

@hittitezombie @RoyceWilsonAU @sovietvisuals Back in the day, Soviet amateur radio was a club activity, often tied in with military auxiliary organizations like ДОСААФ. A regular citizen wouldn’t have a radio in their apartment. Later on, maybe. But not likely in 1958.

@RoyceWilsonAU @sovietvisuals That’s a domestic broadcast tower. If the journal was like later titles, it contained 'industry' news, light technical discussions, profiles of the chief engineer/tractor driver at the such-and-such rural microregion broadcast center, etc. No 1 = January

@alice_radley @TheTattooedProf British Museum = collection of stuff stolen from dark-ish people around the world. (Except for that one living-room sized space with stuff from neolithic East Anglia.)
