What I have to say is quite simple. Leasehold cannot exist in any form by the end of this parliament. It is exploitative, archaic and rooted in the idea that landlords are morally better than tenants. A country that promotes equality can’t tolerate leasehold.

@LordNumpty @oggyboytchev @KirstieMAllsopp @PaulFallows3 All you did with a mortgage on a leasehold flat is effectively pay your rent up front. It's a swindle that preys on those desperate to get on the property ladder. Freeholders get to ratchet up your service charge and drop section 20's at will regardless of your circumstances.

@LordNumpty @oggyboytchev @KirstieMAllsopp @PaulFallows3 Leasehold was explained to me when I bought my first leasehold flat as "just like paying a gardener" the cost on my first place cemented that mistruth, so I naively bought the money pit I'm in now. What they don't explain is even when you pay your mortgage off it's not your home.

By definition, leasehold is nothing more than a time-limited right to occupy a flat, subject to fees and charges, terms and conditions determined by the owner of underlying land known as a freeholder. If leasehold ever works well for an occupier. It is a pure accident!
