@MallardDuck13 @MaryRuwart yeah but that is where civilization began, many other innovations had to be adopted, like money, before they could afford to transition to bureaucratic states. the roman empire itself owed (figuratively) a lot from adopting many aspects of cultures they had conquered.
right, and my point has been from the start that we should replace most of government with markets, and the government should be in line with corporations or our expectations of corporations. Like none of us would be happy if a corporation became large and not only started charging rents for land but also demanded a portion of our income. We would want 'government' to break up the corporation that became that big, but when it is government that does this we pretend it's some kind of exception. Just as government can create ponzi schemes, can create fake money, can steal from people, they get all kinds of exceptions in peoples minds.
there are many "legal structures" that existed without states, warlords simply adopted them to settle disputes internally without weakening themselves to their enemies. the government and state are just fictions, a deadly game that people play, one where the less we play the more we prosper

yeah but there are many different kinds of states, many states have been destroyed, property taken. property taxes by themselves are anti-capitalist, they go against private ownership. but if state were a corporation that you could own shares in, then you would mostly get back your property-tax/rent as a dividend, minus the cost of security a state would provide. but we don't live in that world, the state behaves in many far worse ways than any corporation could get away with, in this world property tax amounts to theft.
