“Women have dealt with this for generations” is ironically part of my point. Women have been culturally warned about male sexuality and behavior forever. “Men are dogs,” “all men cheat,” “men only want one thing,” etc. existed long before social media. The average man having mass access to candid conversations among millions of women is comparatively new. But there’s another distinction you’re overlooking, men and women historically haven’t occupied identical positions in courtship. Men are generally expected to initiate, pursue, propose, provide and protect. That requires men to believe the woman and the relationship are worth investing in. Women could become highly skeptical of male nature and still desire marriage and male investment. But when men become skeptical of women, you’re asking the skeptical party to still initiate the relationship and assume many of its traditional obligations. So the question isn’t whether men can “handle” knowing more about women. Of course they can. The question is whether, after learning it, they retain the same incentive to pursue and invest.

I want people to actually read this entire exchange because it perfectly illustrates something much bigger than dating. Her argument is, “If men are listening to women, why aren’t they using that info to become the men women want?” I explained that a man can listen, understand perfectly, and use that information to become more selective, pursue less, establish different boundaries or simply decide he disagrees. Watch how the standard moves throughout the conversation, Listen -> understand -> apply -> apply it in a way that benefits women. If he hears her, understands her argument, processes the information and reaches a different conclusion, his understanding is treated as defective. This is why so many conversations between men and women go nowhere. “You don’t understand me” often times really means “you understood me, but you didn’t arrive at the conclusion I wanted.” And this is exactly why my original point matters, men are listening. Social media has given men unprecedented access to women openly discussing everything pertaining to dating, sex & relationships. The mistake is assuming that greater understanding of women would automatically make men more accommodating toward women. Sometimes information creates empathy and sometimes it makes you more cautious, less idealistic, more selective and changes who you’re willing to pursue altogether. You cannot demand that men listen to women and then invalidate what they learned because you don’t like what they did with the information. Ironically, the reaction to men changing their behavior may be the strongest evidence that men were listening all along.

She’s being honest, and I actually respect the honesty. But women have to understand that social media has given men access to conversations they were never supposed to hear. For most of history, the average man didn’t have access to millions of women openly discussing how they view men, dating, marriage, sex, attention and relationships. Now he does, & information changes behavior. So when women ask, ‘Why don’t men yearn anymore?’ or ‘What happened to 90s love?’ part of the answer is that you’re asking men with far more information to behave like men who knew far less. You can’t give men access to conversations their fathers and grandfathers never heard in abundance and expect them to approach women & interact with women the same way.
