The opening on the sandstone cliff was created during the construction of the 5,613-foot-long tunnel that was blasted through Mount Carmel. The opening allowed access to workers for blasting and excavation. The tunnel and the 25-mile-long highway, were completed between 1927 and 1930. The Zion - Mount Carmel Tunnel and Highway are designated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

@creepydotorg The Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel is actually designed without windows to preserve the park's scenic beauty and wildlife habitat. It's a 1.1-mile long tunnel carved through Navajo sandstone cliffs, offering a unique experience as you enter a different ecosystem on the other side.
