Another friction question! :) The GCSE spec says work is done when a force *causes* motion. When teaching, how do apply this to braking in a car, where the frictional forces act *against* motion? Negative wd? Or breeze over the directions? #chatphysics

I’ve been engaged in some discussions about what causes the forwards force while running. I used to be a 100/200m sprinter so running questions are uniquely placed to wind me up 😂 @dan_braith has already written a fantastic blog post on this so thought I’d make a quick video.

How do you think as you quickly rearrange an equation? I'm curious about your personal silent thought process (rather than your teaching approach). I tend to "move diagonally" (see pic), or if there's +/- too, I "flip the sign as it moves across". You? Thanks!

Physics teachers - what do you call the forwards force on a runner? I associate thrust with engines, and friction doesn’t seem quite right as we don’t label the forwards force on a car friction... what do you go with? @edmunds_dr @Rosalindphys @BernardRand @fabphysics thanks!
