STATEMENT FROM LET ALBERTA DECIDE CO-LEAD KEITH WILSON, K.C. Albertans should welcome any serious effort to get our energy to world markets. But with the October 19 referendum only weeks away, they are also entitled to ask some hard questions about today’s Pacific Link announcement. The first is: why now? Alberta has been seeking tidewater access for decades. This new pipeline was formally referred to the Major Projects Office on July 2. Yet the major announcement declaring it a project of national interest arrives immediately before Albertans make an important decision about their future constitutional relationship with Ottawa. That timing deserves scrutiny. Its Ottawa playing politics to get Albertans to forget about decades of mistreatment and how Canada does not work for Alberta. Albertans should also look carefully at what was actually announced. This is not yet a fully approved, financed or construction-ready pipeline. The current estimated cost is between $35 billion and $44 billion. Taxpayers are now on the hook for the overwhelming majority of the initial ownership interest, while major questions remain about final financing, new BC tolls on Alberta oil, shipper commitments and the ultimate cost to taxpayers. The pipeline comes with many strings attached imposed by Ottawa. The $20-30 billion Pathways carbon-capture project will be another hit on taxpayers. This brings the combined cost to taxpayers of over $70 billion which is the same amount as the total budget for the Alberta Government including health care, education, and social programs. Today’s announcement is significant and I hope the pipeline ultimately gets built. But Albertans should judge it on the facts, not the timing of a press conference. Does Canada still work for Alberta or can Alberta do better? That’s the question that will be decided on October 19. Serious change is needed in the constitutional relationship so that the Alberta Government does not have to spend decades of effort and billions in taxpayer dollars just to get a new pipeline.
Nine Thoughts on Why Danielle Smith Must Resign: 1. She turned a people’s petition into a process question. Hundreds of thousands signed for a clear stay-or-leave vote. The court killed the petition on consultation grounds. Smith’s answer was not to fight for a binding question. It was to put a two-step on the ballot: remain, or start a future legal process. That is not the vote that was earned. It is a delay dressed as democracy. 2. She is using the Premier’s office to campaign against independence. Neutrality was the minimum. Instead the government is spending public money to sell “sovereign Alberta within a united Canada” while she tells Albertans she will vote Remain. You do not get to activate the independence file, then put your thumb on the scale against it. 3. The Carney handshake is being sold as victory. A pipeline MOU and some federal talking points are being treated as proof the federation can be made to work. Those concessions can be reversed the moment Ottawa needs Alberta as leverage again. Independence is not a tantrum about one Prime Minister. It is an answer to a structure that has extracted from this place for decades. 4. She argued against independence with a number that does not hold. The $400 billion figure mixed debt, pensions, program spending, and startup costs. Later work put a far smaller number on actual state-building. A premier who wants to stay should make the political case. She should not scare the province with a cost that does not describe what leaving actually requires. 5. She split the party she was elected to lead. A large part of the UCP membership is sovereigntist. Senior organizers and constituency people have been on the independence side while she insists the party line is Remain. Highwood has already moved for a leadership review. That is not a fringe tantrum. It is the base noticing she will not ride with them. 6. Nomination fights and stay-home voters are the receipt. Independence-aligned candidates were kept off ballots. Calgary-Shaw went to the NDP in a safe conservative seat. People who built this government stayed home. That is what happens when a leader treats her own coalition as a problem to be managed instead of a mandate to be honoured. 7. “Sovereign within a united Canada” is the bait-and-switch. The Sovereignty Act was sold as the end of letter-writing and the start of enforcement. What we have instead is nine reform questions that still assume Ottawa’s constitution, plus a premier who will vote to stay. The nine questions may be useful. They are not independence. They are a managed protest. 8. She cannot close this file. She has said October 19 should settle it. Independence people have already said they are not going home. A Remain win under a Remain premier does not end the argument. It just leaves the movement without a government that will build the next stage: rural capacity, municipal autonomy, energy and water as provincial instruments, and a state that answers to Albertans first. 9. Resignation is the cleanest path for the cause she will not lead. Smith got people to the starting line and then ran the other way. The movement does not need her as a symbol of half-measures. It needs the field cleared so the next fight is about how Alberta governs itself after the vote — not about whether the Premier is allowed to campaign against the people who made the vote possible. Leadership review is the party mechanism. Resignation is the honest one.
How do you plan to vote in the October 19 referendum? Option 1: Stay in Canada and end the independence process. Option 2: Continue the independence process and move Alberta toward a future binding yes/no vote on independence. Share this to help increase the sample size.
As I watch this trade war unfold between Carney and the United States, there’s an interesting game of chess taking shape. One of Canada’s strongest pieces of leverage against the Americans is Alberta’s oil. If this trade dispute continues to deteriorate, Ottawa could eventually look at taxing, restricting or otherwise using Alberta’s energy exports as leverage against the United States. The problem is that doing so could inflict enormous damage on Alberta’s economy. And this is where the timing becomes incredibly important. The most damaging U.S. tariffs threatening Ontario’s manufacturing economy are not expected to fully hit until January 2027. Alberta votes on Option 2 on October 19. That means the October vote could fundamentally change Ottawa’s calculation before the trade war reaches its most dangerous point. If Albertans reject Option 2 and the threat of an independence referendum disappears, I believe Carney will have far more political room to put Alberta oil on the table. If Option 2 succeeds, Ottawa has a very different problem. Suddenly, using Alberta’s economy as a bargaining chip risks pouring gasoline on an independence movement that has already demonstrated it can win at the ballot box. That is why Option 2 matters even if you are a federalist. You do not have to support Alberta independence today to understand the value of leverage. If you simply want a better deal for Alberta and do not want Ottawa sacrificing our economy to protect its political base in Central Canada, keeping the threat of independence alive forces Ottawa to think twice. That pressure disappears if Option 2 loses. Then there is Trump. Personally, I don’t think Trump has much incentive to publicly boost Alberta independence. We just watched the liberals successfully use anti-American sentiment to rally their political base. Trump openly involving himself in Alberta’s independence debate could hand Carney exactly the political weapon he wants. In fact, this confrontation with the United States benefits the liberals politically in several ways. It creates an external enemy, fuels a sense of Canadian nationalism, gives them someone else to blame for economic weakness and provides political cover for massive new government spending. Trump does not need to say anything about Alberta. The trade war itself creates the pressure. As January approaches, Ottawa may eventually have to decide what it is willing to sacrifice to protect Ontario’s economy and its own voter base. I do not want that sacrifice to be Alberta. That is why I believe Albertans should support Option 2 on October 19. Keep the threat of an independence referendum alive. Keep the pressure on Ottawa. And make it politically dangerous for the Carney government to use Alberta’s economy and the livelihoods of Albertans as a bargaining chip.
I am aware that it is being advertised that I was involved in drafting this document. However, I have not reviewed the draft constitution. Any new Alberta constitution should be developed by Albertans themselves, through an open and democratic process, following a successful referendum on independence. I do not endorse Mitch’s actions here.
During the 19th century, Alberta was on the US dollar, and the US postal service, before there was any connection to eastern Canada via railroads. Cattle were purchased in Texas and driven up to the grasslands of Alberta via the Great Western Trail. Later, American farmers brought the agricultural technologies that had been developed on the Great Plains, and used them to cultivate Alberta. American school teachers also went to Alberta, and took special oaths that still protected their American citizenship, while teaching Albertan school children. In 1906, nearly 25% of the people living in Alberta were American BORN. And, prior to that multi-generations of Albertans originally had American roots. This is OUR Culture, Make Alberta Great Again! Choose Option # 2 on the referendum question # 10 in October
@PardyBruce @thinkonthese52 Nationalized pipelines with the government directing where and how barrels flow, with “royalties” payable to non producing provinces amounts to the effective nationalization of the Alberta Oil and Gas Industry. Who in their right mind thinks this is a good idea.
Congratulations Alberta, you just bought yourselves a TransMountain-like pipeline. If all goes well it will be operational by 2035, and will only cost $50 billion in taxpayer money.... money we don't have. Let's run some very simple economics. It will transport 1 million barrels per day, at a fee of $10/barrel. That means it will generate $10,000,000/day in revenue, which is $3.65 billion/year. But it will cost at least $1 billion/year to operate (power, labour, chemicals, maintenance, interest on the borrowed money, carbon tax, etc). So the initial payout is $50 B divided by $2.65 B/yr. which is 18.8 years. Who wants to wait almost 20 years before they get a return on their investment? The economics don't work because the regulations make the pipeline too expensive and risky. There was a time, lest than 15 years ago, when the private sector could have built this for $10 billion. This is not a win. The real problems aren't being addressed, and this is making things worse.
WATCH: Danielle Smith explains the need for government ownership in developing new pipeline projects.
Tomorrow, Tanya Clemens and I will formally launch a new organization dedicated to supporting Alberta independence and winning the October referendum. Alberta has waited long enough. It’s time to get serious.
DO YOU TRUST DANIELLE SMITH TO NEGOTIATE ALBERTA INDEPENDENCE WITH MARK CARNEY?
Some facts about Alberta’s pathway to independence in 2026. 1. The Supreme Court of Canada confirmed in 1998 that all provinces including Alberta have the right to independence and set out the legal pathway. 2. Nothing in the First Nations Treaties in Alberta preclude Alberta separating nor does independence require First Nations to change their Treaties. 3. The 1930 Natural Resources Transfer agreement and subsequent court rulings confirm that the land, minerals (oil and gas), resources, and water are all owned by the Alberta Government. That agreement did not transfer management—it transferred ownership. The 1982 sec. 92A amendment to the Constitution confirmed Alberta’s resource management authority. 4. Section 109 of the Constitution does not apply to independence and especially to Alberta. 5. Albertans send roughly $15–25 billion more to Ottawa than they receive back but it can be as high as $47 billion. 6. Only Alberta’s 48 First Nations need to be consulted and each one of those First Nations will either decide to keep the status quo re Canada administering their Treaties, or ask Alberta to administer them, or ask to negotiate a new treaty. 7. The Federal Government and all provinces will need to sign off on the terms of separation (not just the amending formula). The Constitutional amendments would simply remove all references to Alberta from the Constitutional documents. The Federal Government and the provinces are obligated to conduct good faith negotiations, failure of which Alberta can unilaterally declare its independence.
@Martyupnorth @TroyWestwood Watched it all. Good job Marty. Thanks for speaking out. #AlbertaIndependence
Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state? A recent poll making the rounds sampled 900 people. I don’t think that sample is big enough. Can I get more? Please RT
Alberta separation is a great topic…for Albertans. If you’re not from Alberta, don’t you have bigger things to worry about? Like Canada’s collapsing economy? Mass, unsustainable immigration? The collapsing housing market? Rising crime rates? The cost of food? Interest rates? Rent? We’re all having these conversations. But instead of focusing on what you think we should be doing in Alberta...maybe take this time to think about what your province could be doing better. ;)
Should the Province of Alberta cease to be part of Canada and become an independent state? Important: please repost to reach a larger sample size after voting 🗳️
