"I was bored in ESL, most of the concepts were basic, such as identifying animals or plants. The only impact ESL made was making me feel relatively isolated from my peers. They were unaware why I was being called out, so they assumed I was In trouble." -A.Z, 2nd grade ESL student

"I got pulled out of class and was put in a separate classroom 3 times a week. One difficulty was that it was harder to fit in. As a foreigner, ESL forced me to only hang out with other Asian kids who couldn't speak English." -S.L, currently in HS, 5th grade ESL student.
We're a group of 5 Cal EDU minors from Asian minority groups and have been through ESL ourselves. Much like the racism Asians are facing amidst COVID-19, the stereotype of our English skills, or lack thereof, plays a role in both our academic performance and broken confidence.
