CRT volunteer engineers helping to design a sign that best showcases the Crofton Pumping station. Here is the making of the ‘N’ &’C’ in CroftoN. From my one dimensional drawings in CorelDraw. exported to a .dxf file, to Auto CAD, to a Kutavar CNC Plasma cutter at Bradley works.

Recycled an old Beech Wood antique moulding plane today, into a beading woodturning chisel. The cutting edge is the moulding plane blade brazed onto a 6mm x 6mm square steel shaft. The handle is cut from the Beech body. Once finished I tested it by turning a light pull. pattern.

Non-destructive bench testing and inspection, carried out by Volunteer Engineers, following the repair of the lock side bench. At Sam Farmers lock on the K&A canal at Crofton. SWL x 3 Lockies + lunch boxes. This equals a 1/5th safety factor of maximum capacity. K&A Benchmark.

Helping a bodger friend finish off a newly forged spoon carving knife blade. Ash handle turned in the lathe with a brass ferule, made to fit his hand, dressed and sharpened the blade. Shall I leave fitting the blade and handle together to him …. In bodger tradition?

The secret of Greenham lock 86 - On the K&A canal. Developed by BWB, Sperry Vickers and Lucas Fluid Power, 40 years ago. The project was led by Mr T Lawrence BWB area engineer. The casings of 3 prototype pumps differ to every other one along the canal, spot the difference?

The sun was in just the right place yesterday to photograph the four courses of the brick arch on John Rennie’s skew bridge 99 on the Kennet & Avon canal. Reputed to be Rennie’s first skew bridge and the first built in the country. The bridge to nowhere, a work of art!
