Stimming refers to repetitive movements, sounds or behaviours that can help a person regulate sensory input, emotions, attention or stress.🚨💛 Examples can include hand-flapping, rocking, repeating sounds, pacing or fidgeting. To someone unfamiliar with autism, these behaviours may look unusual. But unusual doesn’t automatically mean harmful. For some autistic people, stimming can help them focus, calm themselves, express excitement or manage overwhelming sensory experiences. 🚨NOTE: Of course, if a behaviour is dangerous or harmful, support may be needed. But the goal shouldn’t automatically be to eliminate every behaviour that looks different. Sometimes what looks unusual is actually a person’s way of regulating themselves.
