I think part of the issue here is that our institutions have never been built around grades/score cutoffs. America has always valued multi-dimensional talent. Part of being American is balancing hard and soft skills.

The French government recently decreed that university cafeterias would have to charge only 1€/meal and, in a shocking turn of events, now students are being turned back after waiting in line because of shortages.

About a year ago, I went to a service at a prominent and very conservative evangelical church led by a famous pastor. While there, I unexpectedly ran into someone from my past, whose mother is a *very* famous person in liberal politics. When I had first met this young man, it was already known that his politics had departed from his parents-- so I wasn't that surprised to see him there. But I talked to him for a while in the course of catching up, and I was pleased to hear that, despite some inevitable tensions on both sides over politics, this young man still had a close and loving relationship with his parents. I told him I thought that was great, and hoped it continued but that, if at any point, the relationship between parents and son were to fracture over politics, that he should make sure that he was not the instigator, and that he should do everything he possibly could to keep that relationship whole. Honor that father and thy mother. It's not that complicated. Of course, I understand that in very rare situations a child may need to sever a relationship with a parent who was or is incredibly and indisputably abusive-- but that should be very rare. And of course, even though the obligation isn't the same, parents should do everything they can to love and nurture their children at all stages of life. Speaking as a son who has a good relationship with his parents despite different beliefs, the "therapists" who are pushing "no contact" or anything aligned with that are evil, and they and their work should be far more heavily stigmatized than it is.
