Thinking about design systems like Lego: 1.0 gave us the bricks. 2.0 added the instructions. 3.0 feels like where we are now, with agents understanding the rules, logic and flows too. 4.0? Maybe that’s when the AI becomes self-aware, takes over the product roadmap, and stops inviting us to the meetings. Jokes aside, it’s probably when the UI starts adapting itself around the user and their needs.

I’ve been working through authentication for Cerius this week. I knew I wanted passwordless authentication using magic links rather than traditional credentials. I think designers benefit a lot from understanding what sits behind the pretty UI, even if they’re not trying to become engineers. In this case, I knew the tools I wanted, explained the behaviour to Claude Code, then tested and refined the flow until it worked the way I wanted. The line between designing the experience and building the behaviour behind it is getting harder to separate.

@h2oilx Thank you 🙏 At first to just improve the scope conversations and eventually to have the option for AI-generated proposals for more speed and personalization.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve been building Cerius, a simple tool to help designers put together proposals for their clients. I know how easy it is to end up doing more than you agreed to, especially when you’re new. A lot of my own career has been about figuring things out as I go. I never planned to become a designer, didn’t study design, and didn’t start out on a team where I could learn from others. I taught myself by making things, making mistakes, and trying again. Now I’m doing that all over again with Cerius. I designed it, and now I’m teaching myself how to build it too. It’s the first time I’ve taken on the whole product myself, end-to-end. I know how much a little guidance would have helped me early on. I’d like to pass on what I’ve learned and make things a bit easier for designers finding their own way. Over the coming weeks, I’ll share bits of Cerius and what I’ve learned building it. It’ll be free to use, and I’ll also share the Figma-to-code design system I've built. I’d love to hear from other designers working through similar things. And if you’re earlier in your career and want to talk something through, you’re welcome to reach out.
