I don’t usually talk about the intricacies of higher education, but I have to say this after a Catch-22-type week: one sometimes gets the impression that the university financial policies are set by an all-consuming fear of the auditors.

@annbaum58 @RplusDyslexia @PamelaSnow2 @devin_kearns This seems to be @haemesmer's approach as well in her book, Teaching Big Words. She talks about moving from syllable types to morphemes. I look forward to discussing this with her on a future episode. I am intrigued.
@measuredmom @annbaum58 @RplusDyslexia @PamelaSnow2 @devin_kearns To be honest, there is not a lot of research on “syllable types.” There is research on teaching kids how to use syllables to help with certain types of words. Syllables are a back-up when kids don’t know the morphemes or when the word is polysyllabic but monomorphemic.

@RplusDyslexia @annbaum58 @PamelaSnow2 @devin_kearns Thank you, this is interesting. I remember seeing Deb Glaser divide words into syllable boxes but then circle the morphemes, even as they crossed over different boxes.
@PhonicsMom @devin_kearns I'd go back to the late 18th century too, but the essential issues then were more about how the spelling system was going to work, and who would print the books than whether it was taught part-whole or whole-part. the "war" terminology is a mid-20th century thing
