#DearSimiValley at the beginning of 6th grade i moved from puerto rico to the US. scared to be in a new country. on my first day of school i was cornered by a group of boys calling me the n word, laughing in my face, and the school just said “boys will be boys”

#DearSimiValley In high school I was shouted at in German and got the Hitler salute daily. When learning about WWII and the Holocaust in history class I got stares, snide remarks, and laughed at. I had friends who's parents forbid them from seeing me just because I was Jewish.

#DearSimiValley i wore a Star of David one single time at school and a classmate i didn’t know came up to me and told me i have a “big ass jew nose”. racism, anti-semitism, and misogyny are pillars of the high schools at this point. teach kindness and discipline hate.

#DearSimiValley in home room one day I found a group of kids drawing a picture of me with the twin towers, a plane, a 7-11, and some other shit. They weren’t my friends whatsoever but played it off like they were just having fun. They got one day detention, just fifteen minutes.

This is the sentiment, right here. #DearSimiValley is not an invitation to just talk shit. Sharing real stories and experiences is important. Reckoning with what we allow and what we have caused is important. From there, we grow. We do not fester.

The #DearSimiValley stories rekindle so many memories of casual racism and harassment growing up. Especially the bit about being pressured to conform to "white" identity just to avoid feeling self-conscious. To anyone feeling that today: It's real! You're not alone!
