Gerald has not made contact. 7:30am - Gerald walked to the water trough. The water trough is 40 metres from where Gerald started. Gerald has not left the field. The Amazon is still where it was. 9:00am - Gerald grazed the south corner. The south corner now has field scabious in it. Field scabious supports six species of bumblebee. The deforestation situation in Mato Grosso state is related to soy agriculture, 85% of which is used to feed pigs and poultry in industrial systems, not cattle, and has no documented relationship with Gerald grazing the south corner of a Herefordshire field. Gerald does not know what soy is. 11:00am - Gerald lay down. The Amazon: still there. Gerald: lying down. These two facts are, as far as anyone on this farm has been able to establish, unrelated. 1:00pm - Gerald produced manure. The manure went into the permanent pasture. The permanent pasture's soil biology improved marginally. The Amazon is not involved. 3:00pm - Gerald grazed some more. The farmer walked the boundary. Lapwings on the east hedgerow. Dung beetles in the south corner. Earthworm count up since last year. Gerald responsible for all of this. Gerald also responsible, apparently, for the destruction of a rainforest he cannot find on a map because Gerald cannot read a map because Gerald is a bull. 5:00pm - Gerald has now been awake for eleven hours. In those eleven hours, he has eaten grass, walked 200 metres total, improved the permanent pasture, supported three species of conservation concern, and not once extended his operational range beyond the field he has lived in for four years. The Amazon has had a difficult year. Gerald was not available for the difficult year. Gerald was in Herefordshire. Gerald was in the field. Gerald is always in the field. The field is the point. Someone should have looked at the field.
