he outlined the clearly best option at the end. its his only baseline so its not debatable. plugging the new features back in would be easier because the upstream/downstream infra that depends on it could be used as a guide. and he should offer to implement a functional backup system in parallel to protect the entire system, not just that server, from similar irrecoverable mistakes. it was bound to happen, the fault is architectural oversight/disfunction. make the mistake productive.
