Every writer of children's books who talks/performs their books with children is making a contribution to the children's literacy. The children will make connections between the spoken and written word, between a person and what is written. It unites oracy, literacy and thought.

Emotional immaturity comes out as rebellion. Doing things to upset someone, to prove a point, or have the upper hand. It's attention seeking rather than connection seeking. As we mature we learn to be vulnerable and directly ask for what we need.

When I was sent to McLean Psych Hospital at age 18, all I felt was shame. I didn't care that Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, & Robert Lowell had been there. 4 years later, I graduated from Harvard. Their poems helped me get there. It's my turn to say mental illness is not a stigma.
