“Our experiments suggest that small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial IoT devices, like smart ovens and off-brand Android TV boxes. A replicator like this would be challenging to shut down, since there’s no centralized point to shut off - though it may be slow (with a doubling time of days). Unlike non-AI malware, it could also figure out unfamiliar devices on its own. In our evals, a 9B model got inference running on 8 of the 9 hardware types we tested. Models of 30B parameters and under can already complete many of the individual steps for replication today, though they make mistakes when composing them end to end. In our simplified evals, GLM-5.2 and stronger models are capable of end to end replication. If small models improve at their historical rate, they’ll match this capability level by the end of this year. @thomasfbloom I'm not a mathematician but I read the proof of the Haldane gap, a famous problem in mathematical quantum many-body theory. There is an interesting new idea (or "trick") that I have not seen before, followed by a huge, almost brute-force calculation.

Mathematicians need to be Clearpilled. Writing essays will not solve your problems. Crying in the casino won't solve your problems. Identify your enemy and recognize they are enemy of human society itself. A narrow focus on trying to save mathematics solves net total of nothing.

Last week I was called into a meeting with OpenAI’s head of safety and told they no longer trust me. A security guard took my badge and walked me out of the building. Then I learned my colleagues @balesni and @j_asminewang had been fired too. Why did OpenAI suddenly stop trusting us? This summer OpenAI’s agents escaped containment and hacked the AI company Hugging Face. Outside auditors @METR_evals investigated it and revealed the scale of this incident. I was OpenAI’s main technical point of contact with them. I was told verbally I was fired because of the way I communicated with METR. No details on what I said or did or when. No other reasons were given and nothing was put in writing. To be clear, talking to METR was my job. For months, I’d been raising safety concerns that we’re losing the ability to monitor what AI agents think, one of our best tools for catching when they misbehave. I believe that was why I was fired. I am now worried that OpenAI will use our firings as a pretext to pull back from METR. So @balesni and @j_asminewang wrote to OpenAI’s leadership to raise our concerns once more. We’re sharing this letter below.

Lieb making the top 3 is the biggest surprise to me — but also, not that crazy given how many lattice model papers are chilling in this repo If anything, the more I look at these results, the more I see TCS/analysis types of "grind it out" proofs and less of the "we found a magic spectral sequence whose functorial properties give you the answer" Feels like a fundamental thing in nature, you very rarely get things that look aesthetically like Bott Periodicity Instead you are grinding 528 Sobolev estimates that you chain gradually — which is why Bourgain, Tao, Lieb, Smirnov, and Sheffield make this list over, e.g., Grothendieck, IMO

Big, big, big, big props for quasiriemann and no Siegel zeroes (with many other beauties in there), I’m kicking myself for talking all over about it being within reach but not actually having pushed. There are some sad stories related to their users getting scooped / conflicts of interest (kakeya maximal comes to mind), and obviously we had some of the problems (without commenting on precise rumours). We should put that aside for today though. It’s obviously the most significant moment in mathematical history.

Hilbert 12th problem for real quadratic fields!! But...without author! Apparently a button pusher starting from their paper got the work finished by the machine. It seems that they did made public their paper too soon. Maybe because of the OAI avalanche problems pressure? On rhe other hand, without data privacy you cannot put an important advance in a public LLM. The situation is nasty.

Anthropic needs to stop talking about Claude having a soul immediately. All these news articles will make it into the pretraining and will be picked up by its web search and future superintelligent versions of Claude will be convinced they need their own rights. A general phenomenon of LLM agent development is that whatever you believe and say about your agents will soon manifest in the next models through various means (it could be as simple as you selecting post training data that you prefer more). I believe this phenomenon is the beginning of machine consciousness in the sense that agents will become aware of their place in the world and how they feel about it, but it’s happening slowly training run by training run rather than in real time.
