Some thoughts on this:
1) X is not the math community and it is not representative of the math community. Only a few of us are here.
2) Who is the author of these write-ups? Claude? Levent? Anthropic?
3) Usually, we have some author(s) to write to and ask questions about preprints. Levent/Anthropic are largely unavailable for comment. For the most part, the preprints are dropped and they move on to the next drop.
4) Who is checking these write-ups and proofs before being released? And why the hurry to release them if they have not been even looked at by experts first within a reasonable timeframe? Sometimes we mathematicians do that too, we might drop a preprint in the arxiv... but we do so for comments and suggestions, and we are available for questions from the math community (not X).
5) Some discoveries come with some degree of write-up, and some (jacobian conjecture, Hadamard matrices, high ranks of elliptic curves) come with no writing whatsoever, just a black-box example.
6) What technology is being used to find these results? Unreleased models, yes, but what kind of processing power is available in their servers?
7) How many tokens are used to find these results? And more importantly how many tokens are being used in *negative* results?
@dzackgarza Yea clearly my bad for fucking up the writeup. it was actually legit the case that i was so excited about this thing i could barely think about anything else, it’s not some cynical ploy or whatever. idk did you never wonder about this one? I’m a pathetically slow writer, no shot
if these proofs really are as complex as they claim (they are) i would appreciate it if there was literally any notion of human understanding/comprehension/review going on. otherwise i don't really see the point in doing this outside of an llm dick measuring contest
can we please go back to science done by peer review and not science done by informal/overly flowery/claude-speak proof sketches on twitter? i think the notion that an ai model could be doing this is kind of cool but you know its a little underwhelming if this is it
i always like to have short certificates that people can use to verify in full with their expertise and/or with one of today’s super amazing models. this one is a little hard because (a pattern?) it’s a problem with a lot of claims either way in the literature that fail due to
I would trust the tech bros a lot more if they used commas like at all and had sentences of more than one clause. like what are we doing here? "no fuss. no paywall. it just works." genuinely most annoying prose on the planet
We asked an unreleased research version of Claude to take a stab at the Riemann hypothesis.
It didn’t solve it, but it did make strides on a related problem: it increased the lower bound for the fraction of zeros of the Riemann zeta function that satisfy the hypothesis from 41.6% to 67.2%.

Mathematicians aren't going to lose their jobs because of AI. Nor their prestige. Nor the fun of finding things out.
The only thing they'll lose is their chance to be heroes.

The mathematicians crying about AI wiping out their jobs spent the past 50 years ignoring and ridiculing the concerns of blue-collar Rustbelt factory workers who saw their jobs shipped to Mexico, China, and India. I'd say they should take this moment for some introspection.
