Anthony Omari was asleep at Faraja Children’s Home in Ngong, Kenya, when six men with machetes reportedly broke in on the night of 23 January. It was the fourth attempted break-in that month. Omari was 24. He grabbed a hammer he kept under the bed and went at the intruders, pushing them outside while his mother, Martha Bosire, and 37 children were still inside. After he got them out, he turned back toward the scared kids gathered near the door. That’s when one of the men reportedly slashed him across the face with a machete. Even with a bad wound he managed to lock the front door before he collapsed from blood loss. At hospital doctors put 11 stitches in a cut that ran from his forehead down his cheek. Two days later he was discharged and went straight back to the orphanage. He didn’t want the children left without someone watching them. His story later reached Ben Hardwick, a 21-year-old Penn State student interning nearby, who helped get it out to more people. The home had already been hit three times that month, and Omari had faced the attackers each time. His mother kept running Faraja for abandoned and orphaned children in Ngong. Omari became known for how far he went to protect the kids in that house.

That is not the standard at all. Christianity does not argue, “Our supernatural claims are believable because miracles are possible, therefore every supernatural claim made by another religion must also be accepted.” The question is evidence, provenance, chronology, independent attestation, and consistency with what was already revealed. I don’t reject Muhammad splitting the moon because “miracles are impossible.” I reject the claim because I see insufficient historical evidence that it happened. I don’t reject Abraham and Ishmael building the Kaaba because building a structure is miraculous. I question it because where is the contemporaneous or ancient historical evidence connecting Abraham to Mecca? The Qur’an, written many centuries after Abraham, asserting it does not establish the history. The same applies to Muhammad’s night journey. The issue isn’t whether God could miraculously transport someone. Of course He could. The question is whether there is adequate reason to believe this particular event occurred. And the stories about Jesus speaking from the cradle and animating clay birds actually demonstrate the problem especially well. Christians don’t reject them because they’re “too miraculous.” Similar infancy stories about Jesus predate Islam in apocryphal Christian literature. Their later appearance in Islamic tradition therefore raises an obvious historical question about transmission and dependence. Meanwhile, the feeding of the 5,000 is attested in all four canonical Gospels, within the earliest Christian textual tradition concerning Jesus. The resurrection proclamation appears even earlier in material preserved by Paul. So no, the distinction isn’t: Christian miracle = believable Muslim miracle = unbelievable. The distinction is: What is the evidence for each individual claim? If your response is essentially, “You believe Jonah, therefore you must believe Muhammad split the moon,” you’ve abandoned historical analysis altogether. By that standard, believing any miracle would obligate you to believe every miracle claimed by every mutually contradictory religion. It obviously doesn’t. The possibility of a miracle does not establish the historicity of a miracle. Each claim still carries its own burden of evidence.
