On week 10 of maternity leave, my thoughts turn to social science. Here are some hypotheses I would like to see tested. (1) Formula feeding —> more equal parenting & effects last beyond a year. (2) Babies born in summer sleep longer at night because they get more outdoor time.
If there are already studies looking at these questions, please send my way!
@emilythorson I love Lactivism by Courtney Jung on exactly these issues amazon.com/Lactivism-Fund…
@emilythorson @jenniferdoleac (1) Seems pretty important to me. The magnitude of the propaganda on breast feeding, given the apparently thin evidence on the long-term benefits of it, still boggles my mind.
@emilythorson #2 depends on where you live. In PHX any month not in summer would be substantially more outdoor time

@emilythorson I cut a deal. I'd breastfeed, but the non-breastfeeding parent would be responsible for dealing with all night-time wakeups not requiring the milk machine. Pro tip: one of these phenomena lasts a lot longer in a child's life than the other. #Winning
@emilythorson Your no. 1 has more to do with whether or not your co-parent is an asshole or not than if you breastfeed. It's possible to share the wealth. Your no. 2 is absolutely true. Sunlight has so many positive impacts, it's not just sleep, but sunlight regulates the body's natural
