Tinubu removed fuel subsidy with one sentence. Nigerians have been paying for that sentence ever since. The argument was that subsidy removal would free resources, stabilise the economy and eventually make life better. But what has the average Nigerian actually experienced? Fuel became more expensive. Transport fares climbed. Food prices followed. Electricity costs rose. Businesses transferred higher operating costs to consumers. The naira weakened, and purchasing power collapsed. That is the real meaning of the figures Nigerians now see around them. A policy can look brilliant in an economic presentation and still become disastrous if ordinary people are forced to carry the entire burden without adequate protection. This is where Atiku Abubakar offers a fundamentally different approach. Atiku has argued that subsidy reform should not mean abandoning Nigerians to market shocks overnight. His proposition is to restore a properly structured subsidy intervention while auditing the system, blocking leakages and ensuring that support reaches the economy instead of becoming another feeding ground for corruption. That difference matters. Nobody is arguing that the old subsidy regime was perfect. It was riddled with inefficiencies and abuse. But reform should mean fixing what is broken, not removing the roof while millions of people are still inside the house. Nigeria needs economic reform with a human face. A government should be able to protect public finances without destroying household finances. Tinubu chose shock therapy. Atiku is offering adjustment with protection, accountability and economic breathing space. By 2027, Nigerians will not be voting on economic theories. They will be voting with memories of what fuel cost, what food cost, what transport cost, and how far their salaries could carry them. That is where this election may ultimately be decided.
