More Asians need to wake the hell up and remember what families like this represent: taking responsibility for our lives, working hard, building strong families, and prioritizing education. Too many young Asians are buying into political messaging that encourages them to see themselves primarily as victims waiting for someone else to make things right. Discrimination exists. So do barriers. But acknowledging those realities is different from letting them define our identity or determine our future. Be skeptical of anyone who benefits from convincing you that you’re powerless without them.
You make a sweeping claim about propaganda, then treat a Vietnamese immigrant family’s political disagreement as proof they’ve been manipulated. Where is the evidence for that conclusion? If this family fled communist rule, perhaps their concerns deserve consideration before you explain to them why they don’t understand freedom. Their experience doesn’t make them infallible. Your disagreement doesn’t make them brainwashed. You’re right that universal healthcare alone isn’t communism and that the Democratic Party isn’t a communist party. But choosing healthcare as your example doesn’t answer every concern about the socialist left. There are real proposals to expand public ownership. Mamdani has proposed city-owned grocery stores and legal action to transfer chronically neglected rental buildings to nonprofits, land trusts, or tenants. DSA explicitly advocates broader worker and public ownership. This raises legitimate questions about property rights, government power, competition, and accountability. You don’t answer those questions by insisting anyone asking them has fallen for Republican propaganda. Your Trump argument also creates a false choice. Someone can oppose socialist economic policies while objecting to Trump’s conduct, third-term rhetoric, or military decisions. Voting Republican doesn’t require believing every Republican action defends freedom. If your argument is that this family is overlooking specific threats to democratic institutions, identify those threats and explain the inconsistency. That would be an argument worth debating. Instead, you’ve assumed their motives, dismissed their judgment, and declared their disagreement evidence of manipulation. Your closing line applies to you, too: being convinced you’re thinking independently is no guarantee that you are. That includes being convinced everyone who reaches a different conclusion must have been fooled.
