🇺🇸US trade deficit jumps to $ 105.6bn on OIL and AI Imports rose 4.3%. Exports rose 1.4%. 2 things are driving it. 1️⃣The first is oil🛢️ The 🇺🇸US exports more petroleum than it imports, but its refiners still buy foreign crude, mostly heavy barrels from 🇨🇦Canada. With Brent near $100, each of those barrels costs more. Early data showed imports of industrial supplies up 16.6% in August, led by petroleum. 2️⃣The second is AI🤖 Most data centre hardware is built abroad. Imports of capital goods rose 4% in August, after imports of computers and accessories jumped $ 13.5bn in July alone. You can see it in where the deficit sits. In July the gap with 🇹🇼Taiwan was $ 18.1bn, bigger than the gap with 🇨🇳China at $ 15.2bn. 🇲🇽Mexico ($ 27.5bn) and 🇻🇳Vietnam ($ 23.3bn) were bigger still. Tariffs were meant to narrow the gap. Through July the deficit was 29.6% below the same period of 2025, although early 2025 was inflated by companies stockpiling ahead of tariffs. But companies racing to build AI capacity have no domestic supply of servers at scale and refiners need crude whatever it costs. The open question is oil... If Brent stays near $100, the import bill stays high into Q4.

🇮🇷 Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Monday that negotiations with the U.S. had become “futile,” accusing Washington of repeatedly attacking Iran following talks and seeking to bring down the Islamic Republic. “Every time we come to the negotiating table, war is immediately imposed upon us,” Pezeshkian said, according to IRNA, adding that the U.S. had attacked Iran three times following negotiations. “This demonstrates that they do not seek dialogue. On the contrary, their goal is to bring down the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

TURKEY’S FUND CRISIS IS GETTING WORSE. Turkey has now frozen assets linked to executives at several investment firms, with banks and other institutions ordered to stop those assets from being moved or sold. 25 people are under investigation, and 15 have already been detained. And this is happening just days after 131 investment funds worth around $18.3 billion were ordered into liquidation after some failed to meet withdrawals. First, investors couldn’t get their money. Then came forced liquidations and arrests. Now authorities are locking down assets while investigating suspected market manipulation. The biggest concern now is whether this is all the end or just the beginning of something much worse.
