One of the greatest endings in cinema. The way Fincher builds the tension in this scene is incredible. You know something terrible is coming, but the reveal still hits like a truck. I've watched it so many times and it never loses its impact.

The writing in The Vanishing (1988) is so good at making small, innocent moments mean something completely different later. That scene where Raymond gets his daughter to scream seems like a weird little game at first. Then you realize what he was actually testing. So clever.

One of my favourite things about The Vanishing (1988) was watching Raymond prepare for the kidnapping. He rehearses everything, makes mistakes, adjusts, tries again. Almost like an actor. It's so disturbing because he's treating something horrific like an ordinary practice.

Watched The Vanishing (1988) last night. What a film. The cinematography, the grain, the colours, the framing, the late 80s European atmosphere. Everything looks so ordinary, almost comforting, while something deeply disturbing is happening underneath it all. Loved it.

@janusfilms Some people are so obsessed with the rules of filmmaking that they forget to ask whether something actually works. Conventions are useful, but they shouldn't become limitations on creativity.

@Gibboanxious Alex Garland is one of my biggest inspirations as a filmmaker. I've followed his work closely for years, and Ex Machina is still one of my favourites. I love how he can take a relatively simple premise and turn it into something so unsettling and thought-provoking.

@CinemaScene404 Heat, and it's not even a question for me. I love The Departed, but Heat is on a whole different level.

@auteurhouse The similarities between Persona and Mulholland Drive go way beyond these shots. Two women, blurred identities, and that unsettling feeling of never quite knowing what's real. I wonder how much of Bergman's film influenced Lynch.

@filmfr4me Children of Men is one of those films that gets better with every viewing. The cinematography is incredible, especially those long, uninterrupted takes. But what makes it so great is how the camera puts you right in the middle of everything. Such a brilliant film.

@Updated_Jennie The Big Lebowski. I can't look at Jeff Bridges without seeing The Dude. That character is permanently attached to him in my head.. I can't look at Jeff Bridges without seeing The Dude. That character is permanently attached to him in my head.

@filmfr4me After watching Stalker and reading Roadside Picnic, I've been wanting to explore more of Tarkovsky's work. Solaris has been on my watchlist for a while. These frames are making me want to watch it even more.

A film can have incredible cinematography and still leave me completely cold. I'm starting to realize that a beautiful shot and a shot that actually makes you feel something are two very different things.

@Chad_Em_Gee @istgnolimit Exactly. And now it’s almost impossible to separate the song from that ending. Fincher couldn’t have picked a better track for that scene.
