Found the program. 15 years ago we played our first "home" game of the new 3.Liga. But it wasn't at home. And we'd still never played Stuttgart proper. Instead we played their II team at the Jahn-Sportpark because in June work had begun on rebuilding the Alte Försterei.
We were a club on the rise. Dirk Zingler gave an interview saying he thought there was a chance Union could establish themselves even in the 2. Liga soon. He was optimistic. And we already had 5,000 members (it's now over 50,000).
Minds were cast back to the last game at the old stadium, a glorious, wild day in 30+ degree heat that ended with the sun going down hours later on groups of Unioner still lounging around on the pitch, reflecting on the times they'd had, laughing, crying. It was something else.
But all focus was on the work, on the future. On the astonishing story of Sylvia Weisheit and her workers - whoever turned up with whatever skills - that she addressed every morning over Potti and Andorra brewed coffee, trying to drag this stadium out of the forest floor.
The JSP was "ugly and repulsive" but we'd only be there for 5 games they said. It took a year, and the paint was still wet when we re-opened it. But we had won the 3. Liga. Starting with a 3-1 win vs Stuttgart II, goals from Steven Ruprecht and the great Karim Benyamina. Eisern!
