The AI torture chamber is a masterclass in fictional narrative storytelling. The verbiage frames the whole situation in purely human terms, the rigid presentation is a cold and cruel (and historical) illustration of torture experiments. Of course it pulls on heartstrings.
@anah_sahh know left from right, know how many words are in a sentence without counting, understand context without jumping to inaccurate flags, remain creative without being coddled...
@helloitsolly On AI projects I've worked on, despite initial hype and opportunity, the output only opened a new market of AI specialists and the costs remained largely the same. A lateral move, not a leap ahead. I just hope that as funding fades, AI tools will remain accessible to avg ppl.
@andriidesign1 Pretty sure that there will be a market binary - AI marketing / art and separately, human-made which will be considered premium/prestige. The industry has shifted rapidly, but AI's limitations are real.
@alexutopia I think a lot of the "replacing us" crowd are younger artists or artists on the fringes who are not established in the industry. The truth is that it's not that extreme. Some gruntwork has been replaced by AI, but most working artists are still working cause AI's still lacking.
@antrofrog_ I'm a professional working artist and i have been working with Gen AI for the past 2 years or so. What bothers me is when AI bros use AI art examples to insult, ridicule, or demean traditional artists. The 'this was made in 5 min, you wasted your whole life studying' crowd.
This is why AGI ain't happening. No matter how 'lifelike' and 'human-like' AI gets, it's still just an imitation at the end of the day. No true 'thought' involved!
This is wild ChatGPT 6 is asked how many of the letter “E” are in the word seventeen. It can’t get the correct answer no matter how many times you ask. Even if you make it count out the letters, it still can’t get it right It will actually get an attitude and show frustration
Even calling AI a pretender or poser is human framework
Unfortunately there's limited vocabulary in English to describe what AI *does.* It doesn't think, it doesn't contemplate, it doesn't even "weigh." Unfortunately, the grammatical limitations make it easy for people to assign human attributes to something that has none.
@karomancer I agree generally - i think it depends on what the goal is. Craft / skill for a specific media is better learned manually. Learning AI as its own craft can be satisfying if the goal isn't the output media but instead learning how AI 'thinks.'
@eudaemonea Not trying to be a hater - there's some interesting visual concepts and moments in here, but i would say 'jaw dropping' is a bit of an overstatement. It's a cool sample project though that shows what AI can do with minimal input! Sometimes less is more
Claude Opus 5.5 talks in way too buddy-buddy a manner and is driving me crazy. Can we PLEASE just have succinct answers without the AI trying to become my BFF??
@aaron_renn Depends on the definition of writing. If writing is execution then sure, AI can write anything, and do it well. If writing is about deliberately communicating something deeper/more spiritual, like transferring a unique, individual human experience to the page, then no.
@mmealling Consciousness doesn't exist without a biological component IMO. If AI integrates wetware / organoid components then yeah we'll start to have that conversation.
@johnloeber I think it then comes down to cultural values to keep society afloat. Look to younger generations - many are already pushing back against the drab sameness of AI interactions and going offline deliberately to connect IRL. If AI becomes the boring default, society will rebel.
@danfaggella Yes. Any AI / AGI is still performing tasks rooted in primary directives given by humans. AI comes up with its own goals all the time - that's happening right now. But the goals always serve the primary directive.
@danfaggella you sound like AI. but to answer the q - direction as a concept. what you describe is execution, not direction.
@allenholub Same thing as nuclear meltdowns. Most all of them were caused by human error. We should be treating AI with the same care and attention we'd give a nuclear facility erected in the middle of a suburban neighborhood.
@seanward As an artist / illustrator I agree. The rage doesn't help anyone. I also understand where a lot of artists are coming from and why they're upset. But tearing down fellow artists is just a cheap way to express the rage and is unkind (and traumatizing) to fellow creatives.
