I am posting this archival video to impart the following striking lessons in history: 1, There was indeed a country, a proud country, borne of absolute necessity, and in defense of cherished freedoms. 2, Those who led the country were youths, all under 35 years of age, including its Head of State, General Ojukwu. The elders merely advised. 3, The soldiers who defended the country were very young and inexperienced but they defended gallantly, and gave their all. 4, The lessons of why such a country was borne in violence has not been learnt to this day.

How was Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe made President and Head of State? Many people do not know the process. It was not by general election. Zik was Governor General representing the Queen from 1960 to 1963. When Nigeria decided to become a Republic on 1st October 1963, Balewa and his government said we must have our own Nigerian as Head of State. They did not call for election. What they did was to write Zik name inside the Constitution itself. Section 157 of 1963 Constitution says: Nnamdi Azikiwe shall be deemed to be elected President of the Republic on the date of commencement of this Constitution. That is the law. Nigerias first Parliament passed it. They sat and voted for it. Balewa told Parliament, we can never reward Zik enough for what he did for Nigeria independence struggle. Let us honour him by putting his name in the Constitution. Once Parliament passed that clause, it was gazetted. On 1st October 1963, Nigeria became a Republic and Zik automatically became President, Head of State and Commander in Chief. He took his Oath at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos. No campaign. No ballot paper. The law itself made him President. That was how Zik became President. It was not ceremonial appointment. It was law. You fit write person name inside Constitution today again? No. Na only Zik get that honour. That is history we must teach our children.
