Why we've never called $AMPL a stable, is because it doesn't try to remove any volatility (only translate it to supply). Everyone has the same vol exposure, so no extra risk needs to be added and payed for. Hence, AMPL can provide Unit of Account while being non-dillutive.
A zero-risk algo stablecoin is impossible, because volatility can't magically be removed from a system--it has to be translated somehow, into risk. The question to ask for any algo stable: Who holds the risk, and how are they compensated for it?
Been getting a lot of questions about AMPL in the wake of #UST because we're often compared to algo-stables. I'd be thrilled to claim that AMPL is an algo-stable because it has consistently returned to target without intervention, but it's not a stablecoin at all. 1/n
