Today I’m thinking of 3rd grade parents. The #tnleg 3rd grade retention policy won’t improve student, school, or district performance; it will just cause anger, frustration, and anxiety. We have better ways to set our expectations higher and offer accountability/encouragement.

A few weeks ago, I was at the launch of Raising Readers Nashville. As mayor, I’ll be extremely focused on the cause of early childhood literacy. We know how important this work is, and we know we don’t have to harm families to do it. raisingreadersnashville.org
@freddieoconnell Do you dislike the extra resources for summer school and tutoring? Did you know that more than half of MNPS third graders were signed up for summer school before results came out? Families seem to be responding well to the availability of these resources.

@freddieoconnell The 3rd grade retention law is awful, but if schools were teaching ALL our children to read, then many fewer would be retained. We have made strides in MNPS w/ literacy, but so few schools are implementing supports for students of dyslexia who make up 20% of the population.
@freddieoconnell Can we agree on this on: A 4th grader cannot learn required lessons without the ability to read.
