Menurut Bang Ali, wadam harus memiliki keterampilan dan mandiri agar tidak menjadi masalah sosial. Setelah Bang Ali lengser, desakan untuk mengganti istilah wadam menguat. Istilah tersebut dianggap tidak pantas karena menggunakan nama Nabi Adam untuk penyebutan wadam. Pada 1978 akhirnya digunakan istilah lain, yaitu waria (wanita pria).
