NO EXCUSES. This is a great look into the mindset of being a champion. Possibly the greatest commercial of all-time.
PLAYERS: When coaches, teachers, or parents push you or hold you to high standards, it's often because they want you to be better. They want you to reach your potential. They want you to achieve your goals. Be coachable and appreciate how they might be able to help you.
Championships are not won in comfort zones.
POWER OF FAILURE "I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over again in my life ... 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐈 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐞𝐝." ~ Michael Jordan
COACHES: Just because we have "good kids" doesn't mean our team's leadership is strong. "Good kids" still need to be trained, equipped, taught, and shown how to use their qualities to impact the team and their teammates. We can't assume our kids know how to be positive leaders.
Your job as a coach is to get the program to its ceiling. The ceiling is different at each place. This can be a very difficult concept for parents, players, coaches, and administration to understand. Work to get your program to its individual ceiling.
“Almost every major failure in life all starts with an unwillingness to speak the truth or an unwillingness to hear the truth.” - Jeff Van Gundy
"Accountability is the greatest form of love." (John Brubaker)
"Winning is fun... Sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you've done is the point." -- Pat Summitt
Mentally tough people aren’t necessarily more talented or skilled than other people. Mentally tough people just tend to be more consistent, persistent, and resilient.
When coachable players are held accountable, they understand it's for the good of the team and seek to learn from the situation. Uncoachable players think they're being picked on and play the blame game when held accountable.
I don’t know if former players will ever fully understand how much joy it brings their coach to get a call, text, postcard, picture, letter from a former player just checking in. To all the former players out there who do that…it matters, because you matter to them. Thank you.
"Discipline is not punishment. Discipline is changing someone’s behavior." (Nick Saban)
Being angry all the time doesn't make you more righteous than those who maintain joy amidst the chaos.
One thing I believe has changed in the culture of this country is that we don't want anybody to fail. We don't want anyone to get knocked down; everybody gets a trophy. Nobody knows how to handle adversity when they get knocked down. When things aren't going well, you pick yourself up. You have two choices: either keep going, or stay down.
