Long Polling vs. WebSockets vs. Server-Sent Events. All three can deliver updates to a client without repeatedly refreshing the page, but they solve different problems. The mistake is choosing one because it sounds more scalable. Long Polling: The client sends a request, and the server holds it until new data is available or a timeout occurs. The client reconnects after receiving a response. WebSockets: Establishes a persistent, two-way connection. Both client and server can send messages independently. Server-Sent Events (SSE): Keeps an HTTP connection open so the server can continuously push updates to the client. The client doesn’t need to keep polling. Here’s how I’d choose: • Long Polling: When you need near-real-time updates and simpler infrastructure is preferable. • WebSockets: Chat applications, multiplayer games, and systems requiring frequent two-way communication. • SSE: Live dashboards, notifications, progress updates, and streaming server responses. But there’s more to the decision than connection type. You still need to consider connection limits, proxy timeouts, reconnection behaviour, message delivery, authentication, and how your system scales across multiple instances. For example, opening a WebSocket connection doesn’t automatically guarantee that messages reach a client after a disconnection. You still need to design for missed events and reconnection. Here’s my question: If you were building a live dashboard that streams updates every second to 50,000 connected users, would you choose SSE or WebSockets, and what would determine your decision? I’d like to hear the reasoning behind your choice.

One of the biggest problems in distributed systems is service dependency. What happens when Service A depends on Service B, but Service B becomes slow, fails, or stops responding? Imagine an e-commerce backend that relies on an AI service to detect fraudulent transactions. A customer makes a payment. The backend calls the AI service for a risk assessment, but the AI service is down. Now what? Do you block every payment? Keep retrying until your server is exhausted? Or allow every transaction to pass without verification? This is where distributed systems patterns come in. • Timeouts: Don’t let requests wait forever. • Retries with exponential backoff: Retry temporary failures, increasing the delay between attempts to avoid overwhelming the failing service. • Circuit breaker: If failures cross a threshold, temporarily stop calling the failing service and give it time to recover. • Fallback: Define what happens when the dependency is unavailable. For high-risk payments, that might mean holding the transaction for review instead of approving it blindly. • Queues and asynchronous processing: Where immediate results aren’t necessary, accept the request and process it later when the dependent service is available. • Bulkheads: Isolate resources so one failing dependency doesn’t consume everything and bring down the entire system. The important thing to understand is this: A service being healthy doesn’t mean the entire system is healthy. Your backend might be running perfectly, but a single failing dependency can bring down the whole user experience if you haven’t designed for failure. Distributed systems aren’t just about getting services to communicate. They’re about deciding what happens when that communication fails. That’s where good system design separates itself from simply writing code.
