The cheapest fare doesn't always get you there. GateCast grades possible US flight connections A to F, so you can check yours before you book.getgatecast.com/?utm_source=x&…Joined September 2026
Flying Thanksgiving on two cheap separate tickets? Then at the connection you collect your bags, check in again and go through security again. If the first flight runs late, check each airline's policy on a missed flight before you book.

Things you learn on a tight connection: which end of the terminal you landed at, how far your next gate is, and whether you can run in those shoes.
Learn the first two before you book.

Long walk at Chicago Midway? All three concourses are connected and accessible from each other (airport website), so on one booking your connection is a walk. The airport publishes no walking times, so allow for far gate to far gate before you book.

Connecting through Fort Lauderdale? Terminals 1, 2 and 3 aren't yet joined inside security (the airport is building a post-security walkway), so changing between them means security again. Check which terminal each flight uses.

Tight US layover? Ask Claude. On 21 Oct, GateCast was added to Claude's connector directory: search GateCast in Customize → Connectors and ask if your connection will hold.
Grades are estimates, no guarantee. GateCast is independent of Anthropic.

Red-eye connection through Atlanta? Atlanta's Plane Train between concourses has been reported shut for a few hours some nights (local news, Sep and Oct 2025). Then it's the walkway, so allow extra time.

A tight connection with a flight every hour after it: you get home a bit late. The same tight connection onto the last flight of the night: you may be sleeping at the gate. Before you book Thanksgiving, check what leaves after yours.

Changing gate buildings at Tampa means security again. The airport says allow about 20 minutes to clear security when it's quiet and about 45 at busy times, and it lists the days before and after holidays as busy: that covers the days around Thanksgiving.

Don't leave a tight layover to luck. On our estimates from a year of past US flights, nearly 3 in 10 possible connections we grade F would have been missed, against about 1 in 14 at grade A (how we estimate it: getgatecast.com/how-grades-work)
Thanksgiving travel bingo:
✅ Tight layover
✅ Gate at the far end
✅ Train between terminals
✅ Last flight of the night
Nobody wants a full card. Check your connection before you book.

Flying through Orlando for the holidays? Three separate security zones, and your airline decides yours. Two airlines in the same building can still mean leaving security and going through it again (airport website). Check both before you book.

Booking Thanksgiving flights? Before you grab the cheapest one-stop, look at the layover. 45 minutes looks fine when you book. Less so when your first flight lands late. GateCast grades possible US flight connections A to F.

Into Los Angeles from abroad? Passport control first: half of passengers clear it within 16 minutes, 9 in 10 within 45 (GateCast estimate from US Customs and Border Protection wait data, Sep 2025 to Sep 2026). On most routes, bags and security next.

Flying home for the holidays? Miss the last flight of the day and you face a night near the airport. US hotel rooms averaged about $172 a night in July 2026 (CoStar/STR). Next flight in an hour: annoying. Tomorrow: a hotel. Check the next departure first.
