The silk designs of James Leman. A little bit psychedelic, a little bit graphicsy, and in such fresh colours they might date from the 1930s or 60s. In fact they are the world's oldest surviving set of silk designs, found in his Album c.1705-10, created when he was aged 17-22.
Lots more info and pictures in this excellent @thegentleauthor post. I found a postcard book of these in a desk I inherited from my grandmother. She has dementia and won't remember, but I'll take them to show her: I know she'll love them all over again. spitalfieldslife.com/2022/05/04/jam…
@girl_hermes Wow they're gorgeous. I would have said 30's 60's too
@girl_hermes Glorious. How wonderful these designs would have looked when woven into the shimmering silks. What a very skilled artist Mr Leman was and how fabulous that his work still exists.
@girl_hermes The @V_and_A holds the albums and you can access them online via their website, or in person for free via the Print Room collections.vam.ac.uk/search/?images…
@girl_hermes They’re wonderful. The orange one could be 70s wallpaper.
@girl_hermes @theblastedheath 1710... not 1971:
@girl_hermes Wish we could have things like that today mass produced so I could wear something made out of that fabric.
