What they teach you in grad school about policy is that everything comes down to a "cost-benefit analysis." But this isn't true. It's cheaper to just house the unhoused, feed the poor, raise the minimum wage, etc. We don't do these things because our politicians are cowards.
Austerity makes no sense from a cost-benefit analysis perspective. Austerity only makes sense if you're trying to maintain an underclass so poor and desperate that they will take shitty jobs for low pay because the only alternative is living out of a tent under a bridge.
