Hi everyone, I have a question that I haven’t been able to find an answer to elsewhere, so I’d really appreciate any insights. One of my employer’s websites has a sitemap issue that’s been unresolved for quite a long time. Since September 2020, Googlebot has completely stopped fetching our sitemap. When we submit it in Google Search Console, it always returns “Couldn’t fetch”, even though the submission itself appears successful. A few key points: The website is quite authoritative in its niche—probably top 5 in the industry—and we do see Googlebot crawling the site via internal linking, so crawling is definitely happening. The sitemap is valid, accessible via browser, returns HTTP 200, and we’ve ruled out technical issues like robots.txt blocks, incorrect headers, server errors, or invalid XML. We’ve also tried resubmitting and regenerating the sitemap multiple times over the years, with no change. I’d like to understand what could be causing this specific “couldn’t fetch” behavior for Googlebot, especially when crawling the site itself isn’t a problem. Is it a trust/signal issue? A legacy error stuck in GSC? Any ideas or similar experiences would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!
