#50yrsTTRPG 2007: Gumshoe System Finally, an engine for investigative RPGs that doesn’t revolve around a simple pass/fail dice roll. Trail of Cthulhu definitely benefits from the mechanic.
#50yrsTTRPG 2006: Spirit of the Century I’m not a fan of Evil Hat or FATE, but I love the pulp genre. Back in the earlier part of our century, we weren’t so overtly aware that this company was such a woke joke. I might use it now for inspiration for a better system.
#50yrsTTRPG 2005: Dread Jenga as a horror resolution mechanic? Interesting. Bad for my fumble fingers. How about an arm wrestling mechanic instead? 😜
#50yrsTTRPG 2004; Dogs in the Vineyard Quasi-Mormon spiritual detectives rid small communities of demonic influence and possession. Easily adaptable to Jedis, Green Lanterns and other do-gooding organizations.
#50yrsTTRPG 2003-2004 Generics Galore:
#50yrsTTRPG 2002: Mutants & Masterminds What if somebody took Champions and parts of other successful Supers RPGs and adapted them to d20? I can’t say M&M is my first choice for a Supers game, but they produce quality support materials and they adapted it to the DC Universe.
#50yrsTTRPG 2002: Transhuman Space The first RPG that covered a postcyberpunk world where your body was what you made of it. A few years later the excellent Eclipse Phase would be born. It’s one of the few genres I’ve never really known where to go with.
#50yrsTTRPG 2001: Hackmaster. The Knights of the Dinner Table introduced us to a bizarre RPG that catered to rules lawyering and power gaming. The resultant RPG was just a AD&D clone with a few lame jokes. Imagine if it had allowed you (as other meta RPGs) to (Cont)
#50yrsTTRPG 1998-2000: New Editions Sadly, Licensed Product RPGs have the clock ticking from the moment of inception. Somebody else picks it up and for better or worse, a new game is born. Don’t worry, all these will get the same treatment again in the future.
#50yrsTTRPG 1999: All Flesh Must be Eaten It’s hard to remember a time when Zombies weren’t in your face all the time. AFMBE hit at a time off zombie lull. Powered by the simple d10 Unisystem, this nifty little game expanded across eras and subgenres. So good.
#50yrsTTRPG 1998: Unknown Armies This game should be far more popular than it is. The sheer weirdness of a modern world that is based off of broken people and broken magick. Great % system with a twist. A madness system that makes others look tame.
#50yrsTTRPG 1998: Alternity Killed by WotC in 2000. Great point based character creation. Nice dice mechanic. Great settings including Horror/Conspiracy, Space Opera and Gamma World 5th Ed. This could’ve been a great edition of D&D. We were robbed.
@LawDogStrikes Disappointing mash-up of systems, doomed to fail. #50yrsTTRPG
#50yrsTTRPG 1997: Champions:New Millennium Hero System smashed together with Interlock System (Cyberpunk2020)? Two great flavors that taste like crap together. The team up of systems nobody wanted. 4th ed. Champions from 1989 was still winning. This sucker died very quickly.
#50yrsTTRPG 1996: Deadlands Take The Wild Wild West and add on a heap of horror and you have one of the greatest genre hybrid RPGs since Shadowrun. I loved the poker mechanics. Definitely want to get the original back to the table soon.
#50yrsTTRPG 1995: Nightbane Nightbane was originally named Nightspawn, but a ridiculous lawsuit by Todd McFarland made it change names. It had nothing to do with Spawn, but definitely was influenced by Nightbreed.
#50yrsTTRPG 1993: Earthdawn The ancient history of Shadowrun. Wonderful alternate fantasy races such as the Windling, T’skrang and Obsidimen. Nifty dice step system. Stick to the 1st edition as it was the best.
#50yrsTTRPG 1992; Dangerous Journeys Originally announced as Dangerous Dimensions, TSR went into overdrive with lawsuits to stop DD from coming into being. Most folks say the game was too complex, but really most of the system parts could be found in other RPGs of the time.
#50yrsTTRPG 1992: Dream Park: the RPG Where a dude can play a dude playing another dude, much like Lincoln Osiris. The only RPG I know of based upon a book about a RPG. Think Westworld (the movie) on steroids. If you know those references, you had a great childhood.
